I'm sitting here working on a paper and just thinking of all the school hell that is upon me for the next few days. When I have some free time on Friday I'll post some of my best stories . . . but what are yours? And this isn't about all-night beer fests or anything . . . this is about the time you had to write your whole doctoral thesis in one night, or the time you lost your term-paper to a computer error or whatever, and had to write it in one hour. What are your best stories? ------------------ "Up and down, inside out, outside in, some you lose some you win" -- DMB -> "Sweet Up and Down"

Seriously, my first two years at SWT, I actually liked finals. Our dorm was so close knit that we'd stay up all night, most of us shared the same required classes, so it was never too stressful. Plus we were close to the student center and we'd raid the all-night snacks and junk before anyone else could. Of course, after the dorms, everything sucked schoolwise. ------------------ www.swirve.com "Pre-born, you're fine, pre-school, you're f*****."-George Carlin
Most of my best work in High School and College came from late nighters (I never pulled an all-nighter... I would just pass out if it got too late). ------------------ Watch out for gay Limbo Dancers.
I pulled an all-nighter last night as well! I finished off an ENTIRE POUND of banana hazelnut roast . Except, I shouldn't have had to. It was my first all during college. I have a 30 page group policy proposal on the Sudanese war due this afternoon. I was going to do the final editing, so I told everyone to have their parts to me by Sunday night at the latest. One of my 2 partners hadn't sen tit, so I called, and he promised it would be in my email by monday morning. Needless to say, it wasn't, and I ended up doing his part last night. In fact, I finished about an hour ago. Ethical quandary: the guy is actually a pretty good friend... should I put his name on it? He helped a LITTLE with the research, but I ended up typing his ENTIRE portion. grrrrr... ------------------ I would believe only in a God who could dance. - Friedrich Nietzsche Boston College - NCAA Hockey National Champions 2001 [This message has been edited by haven (edited April 24, 2001).]
Haven, If he is a good friend he would not let you down like that. Talk to him about it, but tell him that he does not get credit, unless you guys can work something out. DaDakota ------------------ If you like RTS games, check out this one. www.frontierwars.com coming soon to a PC near you.
I was working on a paper around 12:30 AM at SMF/UGL in March when I clicked on save and the computer froze. Instead of asking for help, I panicked and hit reset. The computer recovered my paper and without reading it I hit save. The save worked but the recovered paper was only half recovered. The other half was a bunch of garbage numbers and letters that didn't make any sense. When I realize what I had just done, I start feeling sorry for myself for about a minute. The paper was due in 24 hrs so I run back to my room where fortunately I had saved it on my hard drive. I lost about 3 hrs of good work. I put the paper on another disk and ran back to the UGL where I stayed until 3-4 AM. Then I went back to my room to sleep. I got up around 10 AM, decided to skip class and worked on my paper in my room. I ended up getting a B on my semester research paper. I think I would have gotten higher if this disk incident didn't happen. If you are wondering why in the world I was at SMF instead of my own computer, there are too many things to do in my room. I'll end up listening to music or watching tv at the same time, I really needed to concentrate in a place that's quiet so I went to SMF. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Smokey (edited April 24, 2001).]
We had a 15 page group paper due recently. Racial and Ethnic Diversity In the Construction Industry being the topic. BTW, there's not much diversity. Anyway, the group member who took on the role of writing the majority of the paper decides at about 3am that he can't fininsh it. He so wanted to write it though because he was a "good writer". So I finish up the body and conclusion and then I read through the final draft. I then see that he's flooded the majority of the paper with useless SAT words which made the paper a chore. Just because you can incorporate big words into a paper doesn't meen you can write! Needless to say, the sun was rising when I was finishing the paper. This guy didn't win any friends within the group. ------------------ "...just because a clever person can complicate the discussion about the truth doesn't necessarily mean he or she is making any progress in finding it."
Man, I have seen more all-nighters than I care to remember. Actually, I never remember everything about them: between 3 and 5 I was always in sleep-deprived haze, before catching a second wind when the sun came up. Weird feeling. My best feat was writing two papers (one 7 pages, the other 10) in one night. The dumbest all-nighter I pulled was for a final exam. The prof told us that we could bring in 1 sheet of notes to the exam. So I spent most of the night before the test typing my class notes into the computer (ended up 16 pages of text) and then using a copy machine to reduce them small enough to fit everything onto that piece of paper, front and back... Still got a friggin B+. ------------------ I'm about to boldly go where many men have gone before.
Last week, I had a government paper due. It was a group assignment so we had to get feedback from the others in our group in order for our papers to correspond to each other. Well we met on a Wednesday and the paper was due on Friday morning. I had absolutley nothing on my paper and just showed up for the group meeting hoping that no one would realize that I had nothing to contribute, well they did realize but didn't care - they just made it clear that I better have something for Friday morning. I went on a complete study binge and cranked out the paper - wound up getting an A on it - very surprising. Procrastination brings out the best in me. -Turbo
Wow, my favorite topic. I've pulled lots of all-nighters, semi-all-nighters, etc. Here's my best one: When I was an undergrad at Rice, I kept screwing around with my major. I didn't realize that I didn't want to be an electrical engineer until I actually took some courses in it. By that time, sophomore year had started. I spent the rest of the year taking random science courses and deciding between materials science and chemistry. By April... was it 7 years ago?... I had chosen Chemistry, but I was still stuck taking the engineering computation class. (It was CAAM something... first year they'd ever offered it, and not very organized.) I pulled "a month of all-nighters" trying to program in Fortran. Don't think I ever did get them to completely work. I was in the computer lab day and night. My friends thought I was going crazy. I'd gotten extensions on several assignments, but even those come due sometime. By the very end of the semester, I was sleeping about 4 hours every 2 nights and realized I was going to have to ask that my plane ticket home be a day later. I pulled at least one complete all-nighter (maybe two) getting the assignments together (finally earning my C in the course), took care of the plane ticket... and, by then, it was afternoon and I had less than a day left to pack and move out of the dorm. I spent the afternoon packing as fast as I could and storing everything I wouldn't need for a while in the dorm basement. I was coming back to Texas for the summer, but not immediately, so I drove most of the rest of my stuff out to Katy to store in a friend's garage (and kept her poor parents up very late). When I got back, it was almost midnight and I knew I would be up all night packing. My poor roommate, I thought. I packed and packed and she never woke up. After a few hours, I took a closer look at the covers on her bed and realized she had never been in there. She must have figured out I was going to be doing this and spent the night somewhere else. (She was on medication that kept her from sleeping well... and my being in and out at strange hours was already a sensitive issue.) I also realized I didn't have enough suitcases, and there was no time to get any boxes or containers. I only had one garment bag left, and stuffed it like a sausage full of every conceivable thing. (I don't think it was ever usable as a garment bag again.) I was using T-shirts for packing material. At about 5 in the morning of my second day in a row being up all night, I went and taped a "good-bye, have a good summer" note to a friend's door. Everything was surreal. I got about 30 minutes of sleep. The last few days, I remember trying to read my newspaper and not being sure which articles I had really read and which I had dreamed. Then I went to the airport and meant to sleep on the plane, but didn't get all that much sleep. I met my parents, we had lunch, and I didn't have time for a nap before I was supposed to visit a friend at her college across town. So I went. When we sat down on her bed in her dorm room, I collapsed and fell asleep, still dreaming of the assignments I was working on 3 days before. (But I hadn't been seriously asleep since.) We realized it was time for me to get out of there. And I did (amazingly I was OK to drive). Went home, and had a late dinner out with my mom... and felt fine. THEN started catching up on the sleep. And I'm late for my office hours, so I'd better go... hope this made some sense. By the way, the baggage handlers at the airport didn't blink an eye at my garment bag. ------------------ Isabel,clutchcity.net lurker since 1996 All your base are belong to Heypartner.
Well, I've got two papers due this week. Not bad. A test on thursday. Still not bad. A hella lotta work to do on my Senior Software project. DOH! No sleep for me for the next week or so! Lord Tree ------------------ Who is Lain?
I have yet to pull an all-nighter but freshman year in H.S. on my first project of the year I was up till 4am. The other week I was up till 4:30am doing a Chem project. Before I finnish H.S. in '03 I know I will pull a few all-nighters. ------------------ ~John~ Help keep the obsessed thread alive post the reasons why you are an obsessed Rockets fan by clicking here
Isabel, I pulled one right before Christmas break and got a ride with a friend to St. Louis leaving at 5pm at NIGHT....and he had pulled an all-nighter too. I slept first. When he woke me for my turn at 2am saying he can't stay awake any longer, he apologized for having missed the turn in Texasarkana for Little Rock, we were headed for the Feyetteville (the winding hills). Oh man, that was the hardest driving I've ever done trying to keep us from getting lost. I really almost killed us. ps--I see you corrected your grammar in your signature ; )
Isabel, or any body else. I have a quick question about Rice: Is it mainly humanities or does it also have big engineering programs? What about Business? Thanks. ------------------ ~John~ Help keep the obsessed thread alive post the reasons why you are an obsessed Rockets fan by clicking here
I got an A on a government paper that I wrote at lunch the day that it was due in high school, the highest in my class. As far as all nighters are concerned, I have never stayed up all night to do anything related to school, but when I did go a full day without sleep, I would feel strangely refreshed for the next couple days, and about three days later it would catch up with me and I felt like I could slep for a week. Some weird stuff can happen to you when you start messing with sleeping habits/sleep deprivation. ------------------ "Of course, thats just my opinion, I could be wrong" -- Dennis Miller
