Alcohol is good for your brain...
    By Mike Tait, Metro

It's the news drinkers have waited years to hear - alcohol consumption is good for your brain.

Apint of beer or a glass of wine triggers the growth of new brain cells and boosts memory, scientists say.

However, while moderate drinking can improve the mind, binge-drinking has the opposite effect.

Laboratory tests on adult mice showed that moderate tippling over a long period led to the formation of new nerve cells in the brain, known as neurons.

The growth of new neurons could improve memory and learning, said Prof Stefan Brene, who carried out the research at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

He believes alcohol stimulates cell growth in much the same was as antidepressant drugs.

The findings did not surprise members of the Campaign for Real Ale.

'It is well known that alcohol in moderation is good for your body so it's no surprise it's also good for your mind,' said a spokeswoman.

'Maybe that is why lots of pub quiz teams are so bright.'

Despite its emerging benefits, Prof Brene advised caution. He warned that

the new cells could encourage alcohol dependency and other negative longterm effects on the brain.

'The increased production of new nerve cells while drinking can lead to alcohol addiction,' he said.

Last night, talk radio presenter Jono Coleman claimed he was living proof of the Swedish academic's findings. 'It seems to be working on me,' said Coleman, who admits to enjoying the odd glass of red wine.

'Sometimes I've had a drink before a show. I think I've done some of my best work under the influence or hung over.'

Are 10 beers and 4 shots considered moderate drinking?

This whole week, I've been running a few minutes late in the morning due to being tired. I fall asleep at work, I feel sluggish, I spend the first hour contemplating taking a sick day to go sleep. I even spent one lunch hour taking a nap.

Anyway, last night, for the Rockets game, I drank a six-pack of Shiner and had about 5 shots of Crown. I knew I was in trouble this morning. However, I woke up 30 minutes earlier than usual. I've been wide awake, full of energy, and ready to go out tonight.

I think I may be on to a very important scientific theory here.

what is considered drinking in moderation?

    1-2 drinks nightly?

    5-6 drinks weekly?

My friend came up with a theory that drinking caused survival of the fittest in brain cells, where the weaker brain cells die first. So drinking is like pruning a tree or pulling out the weeds of a well kept garden....

I've been tired all week too... S#it. Of course, I've been drinking 2 double vodkas with lime on getting home. Mayebe that's not so good, eh ? And then waking at 3:00 am, and then f%$king around on the net till 5, then sleeping till 6, then sleepy through 10. Yeah, ok. I get it.

Well, now I need energy. Suddenly, I found it. It's not red bull - it's empathy. This weekend, I have a dance competition and demanding women. Oh, belive you me, you don't know. Actually, this girl is incredibly super and sweet, just can't handle public shame. So, I can't shame her - I have to make her feel great communal love for her, and her performance personae. No big dealie. Just an execution thing. b etter not drink any more tonight. k. red bull for breakfast tommory 6 am.

According to all the mumbo-jumbo they tell us at UF, 5 or more drinks in a sitting is considered binge drinking.

By that rule, I think I binge every night I go out  .
