Pentagon: Bin Laden deputy complains about money, Iraq tactics
U.S. says it obtained intercepted letter
    From Jamie McIntyre
    CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An intercepted letter from Osama bin Laden's deputy to the al Qaeda leader in Iraq complains that the terrorist network is short of cash and faces defeat in Afghanistan, a Pentagon spokesman says.

The United States obtained a recent letter that appears to be from Ayman al-Zawahiri, al Qaeda's No. 2 figure, to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, outlining both the strategy and concerns of the terrorist network, said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman.

In the letter, al-Zawahiri warns that some of the tactics currently employed by the insurgency, including the slaughtering of hostages and the suicide bombings of Muslim civilians, may risk alienating the "Muslim masses," Whitman said Thursday.

Reading from a summary of the letter, Whitman said al-Zawahiri concedes that al Qaeda has lost many key leaders, is resigned to defeat in Afghanistan, and that its lines of communication and funding sources have been seriously disrupted. Al-Zawahiri includes a plea for financial support, indicating he is strapped for money, Whitman said.

He could not say when the letter was intercepted or when authorities believe it might have been written.

The lengthy communication was said to detail the strategy of Muslim extremists to push the United States out of Iraq and establish an Islamic state that could expand its form of governance to neighboring countries, Whitman said.

Senior U.S. officials told CNN that the 6,000-word letter is believed to have been written within days of the July 7 terror attacks in London. Only parts of the letter have been made public, the officials said.

The decision to confirm the existence of the letter came after an incomplete and partially inaccurate version was leaked to news organizations, the senior officials said.

Earlier Thursday, President Bush made similar points about the terror network in what aides billed as a "major speech" on the war on terrorism, which was launched after al Qaeda's September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

Bush repeated his long-standing contention that Iraq had become the central front in that conflict, and said a U.S. withdrawal from that currently unpopular conflict would leave behind a country ruled by bin Laden and al-Zarqawi.

"We will not stand by as a new set of killers dedicated to the destruction of our own country seizes control of Iraq by violence," Bush said. (Full story)

I hope this is authentic. It would be nice to see some end in sight to the problems that are going on now. Can't rule out this being either a fake or a piece of counter propaganda on the part of the Pentagon.

The CNN and Pentagon both have an agenda. Use your brain here, people - don't just selectively believe anything you wish were true to support your position.

Basso: The last couple days have seen an exponential increase in childish behavior within your posts. I guess you feel the need, in your bitterness, to finally sink to the level of TJ/texxx and post rude insults and bizarre accusations rather than meaningful contributions.

Sad really. Where once I tought you were thoughtful and mature, you have now sunk to the ignore list level.

If authentic, then it is good news. I've never questioned the need to go into Afghanstan or fight Al Qaeda. I still maintain invading Iraq was not the best way to do that.

As a liberal I believe that invading Iraq will be Bush's undoing. Do I want that to happen, no. Sort of like my view of the 2005 Astros. Do I think they'll make it to the World Series, no. Would I like the Astros to make it, yes.

I think this is great news but wasn't Al Qaeda in Afghanistan supposed to be defeated 3 years ago?

We've heard several reports over the past years proclaiming the end is near for Al Qaeda, Iraqi insurgents yet they still keep on going so pardon me for some skepticism.

We've been hearing from some posters for years proclaiming that the end is near for Batman Jones, Glynch, and Wnes yet they still keep on going so pardon me for some skepticism.

You can look at it this way. You have achieved the status of Batman and Glynch in just one offseason. Your potential is boundless! ;)

This should be the standard template for the liberal response to anything good that the troops do.

You guys are pathetic. We get great news from the war on terror and you guys immediately start throwin in qualifiers and excuses to how it's not so good. Whose side are you on??? Seriously.

    LOL!

Basso's deslusions of Americans supporting Al Qaeda is so unfounded it is almost pointless to even argue. People who oppose war in Iraq or want immediate withdraw are little to nothing in ways of supporting terrorism. Yet Basso seems to make that claim over and over again, and refuses to listen or can't listen to discussions on based on reality about the subject.

Basso's claim is like me saying that anyone who likes Reagan supports terrorism since after all he sent weapons to the terrorist supporting govt. of Iran during his presidency. Surely terrorists want weapons even more than they crave for Batman's support of an immediate withdraw in Iraq.

So we might as well face the facts that until we see Basso post some anti-Reagan news stories, that he supports terrorists. Basso actually wants the terrorists to win, and his support of those that give weapons to terrorists only prove it.

Oh yes everything is going great. Women can move freely in Afghanistan uncovered, the non-drug economy is doing great, Osama is in jail but the Admin hasn't gotten around to issuing a press release. Things in Iraq are going swimmingly well there too. I'm booking my Christmas vacation to Mosul this year. I hear the Euphrates is beautiful under a December moon.

Give me an effin break. If you read many of my posts on the GARM or the Astros forum you'll see I'm a skeptic there too when it comes to irrationally exuberant news like that the Rox are going to win 74 games and Yao will make Shaq cry like a baby or that the Stros are going to sweep the Cards out of the playoffs. There is nothing wrong with a healthy does of skepticism.

But then again I must secretly be rooting for Al Qaeda, The Braves and worst of all the Jazz. Yes you've found me out Biggtexx. GO JAZZ!

    ;) ;)

Just to clarify, I don't support an immediate withdrawal. I opposed the invasion, I've opposed the way the war's been waged and I oppose "staying the course" in a losing cause, but we can't just split now. I favor an exit strategy with a full withdrawal as soon as possible, but it's apparent to me that that can't be immediate. I don't pretend to know how or when we can get out -- I just know the war was a horrible mistake to begin with (one that's resulted in thousands of stupidly unnecessary deaths) and that the current strategy is a plain failure. As for what should happen next, I haven't heard a good idea about that from Republicans or Democrats.

So all you do is complain and trumpet the failures that occur without giving credit to the successes. Got it.
