    that's awesome.

i love the guy, but i don't think he's ahead of Moon or Campbell just yet.. right? (and honestly I think Munchak and Matthews have to be in the discussion, too)

But one of the 5 best ever (in Houston pro football history), yes! ;)

I was going a little on potential

2nd to Campbell and based on what I project a clear cut above Moon/Munchak/Matthews all first ballot guys

    imo

yeah i'll go with that on potential. just when you said "(so far)" it made it sound like current.

Anyway, here's to Andre eclipsing his marks next season like he expects! I love his attitude..quiet, but confident.. and if you really push him, you hear how confident he really is. But understated still, and never a showboater. Andre and Fitz are really the 2 perfect All-Pro's for kids to emulate

I love the guy's attitude. Amidst some of the other egomaniacs out there, it's nice to have an actually good and humble person.

If only he can have a real national spotlight in the playoffs...c'mon 2009 season!

I think you undervalue the sustained production of Matthews and Munchak over their entire careers.

AJ may get there, but let's see his whole career first.

I'd love a Matthews and Munchak in their prime...(yes I know,...defense is the priority)...

Great for Andre. Great for us fans. Looking forward

I haven't bothered to pull #s, but I don't know if he's even passed haywood jeffires yet...on raw #s. based on potential, yes, he could go down as the greatest houston receiver ever. but let's not forget how great some of our past receivers have been...jeffires and givens, especially.

as for 2nd best player ever...um...thats a big statement. earl's a legend. absolute running back legend.

warren moon was the greatest black quarterback EVER. that alone makes him hard to surpass as far as houston iconic players.

munchak and matthews are HOF OLs. they rank right up there with anthony munoz who is widely considered the greatest of all time.

top 5 of all time I could potentially see. the pantheon of houston greats is no joke, though.

i probably underrate AJ relative to those guys, just because I grew up with them. they're larger than life.

But AJ has been consistently very good for a while now. And like those guys, he's really easy to root for! Happy he's a Texan.

no doubt. I just hope he gets a chance to shine in the national spotlight while he's still in his prime. that way, the entire nation gets to appreciate him and he won't be considered just a "houston legend". he is arguably, the best WR in football right now amd that's with a subpar OL and, imo, a slightly above average QB. as our line gets better, his #s and production should escalate (scary, but true.)

as for the oilers...man they're boyhood icons to me, too. givens and his electric slide, haywood, curtis duncan, bethea, earl, moon, dishman, sean jones.... I think this group of guys has a few potential icons on it. I can see remembering dre, dunta, slaton and mario 10-20 yrs from now.

in fact, I think mario has the potential to go down as one of the top 5 houston players ever. his combination of speed, power, and natural ability has never been seen here.

there is no way jefferies and givens are in johnson's stratosphere, they played in the run and shoot. gives was tough, jefferies put up the numbers, but neither one of them had even close to the physical attributes. show me a play from either one taking the ball out of the grasp of the DB. plus, andre put up numbers on a bad offensive team before the last two years.

Clear cut? Matthews NEVER missed a game in his life. That's awesome for a o-lineman. Johnson has a long way to go before HOF talk comes up. He needs about 4-5 more dominating years like this to be mentioned.

jeffires had the height, but not the size. givens had the speed but not the size or height. neither have dre's overall pacage cuz dre is an absolute freak of nature.

all I'm saying is I want dre to do it for a couple more years before I automatically place him above these guys. I said b4 I haven't pulled numbers, so maybe #s wise, he has surpassed them. I don't know..but I doubt it. I just feel like those guys were major contributors on fantastic teams and - for now - rank above dre in my book. FOR NOW.

agreed. munch and matthews were stalwarts...i can't put dre above four HOFs (munch, matthews, earl, moon). but the OP did say based on potential, so I guess its arguable he'll end up there. I just can't dismiss some of our greats so easily. I remember their play like it was yesterday.

Great for AJ! Seriously, that's super cool.

Dudes, I have to say...when all the dust settles, Bruce Matthews might end up the best player in Houston professional football history. I love Earl to death, but he gets obvious nods because he played a "skill position." He's definitely the best in that respect.

pull the numbers, you'd be surprised, they aren't great and dre is already closing in

    givens

    571 catches
    8215 yds
    49 tds

    jefferies
    535
    6334
    50

    Andre Johnson
    486
    6379
    33

I was surprised at Givens' numbers, he's the one Dre has to catch overall, and he lags in TDs but again, he plays for the Texans, and that will soon not be if already not a hindrance

I always thought Givens and Jeffries kinda sucked, even back in their heyday.

I thought jefferies was way overrated, and I guess the numbers kind of prove it, givens on the other hand would have put up numbers in any offense. he was fast, a good route runner, tough, and he had good hands.
