I was in Waco for the A&M-Baylor game today. Afterwards. we went to Damon's to watch the UT-OU game & I saw something very pathetic - the Aggie fans who had filtered into the place were cheering FOR OU & booing when others started cheering for UT!

Aggie fans should have their Texan citizenship taken away. Cheering for Oklahoma? WTF? Hell, I didn't go to UT or A&M but unless either school is playing Baylor, I cheer for them - especially when they play hated "foreign" teams such as Notre Dame, Nebraska, & Oklahoma.

Oh well, jealousy breeds contempt I guess.

The Aggie band is a pretty cool thing to see though...

It has nothing to do with cheering for the state, as UT does not represent the state (as 99% of Aggies would probably say).

No single school represents the state.

One more thing... Using your logic, Rockets fans should all cheer for the Spurs and Mavs right?

    Come on!

The University of Texas, the state's flagship institution, located in the state capital, doesn't represent the state of Texas....?

    Wishful Aggie thinking.

    I'm not an Aggie, BTW.

It doesn't represent the state, in the sense that not more than 50% of people are UT alums or students.

By that logic, you believe that a minority of people (what, 10-20% of the Texas population, if that) should represent a state as vast as Texas? "Wishful Horn thinking".

Jeez, if I had a dollar for everytime I read about Aggies doing that type of thing, sometimes being criticized by fellow Ags, I'd have about $10. I'm sorry my fellow Ags did that, but your fooling yourself if you think Longhorns havn't done similar things. Let's just chalk it up to people who take trivial things waaaayyy too seriously.

Which makes me wonder which UC-school that Kagy thinks represents the WHOLE state of California. You've got like 10-20 to choose from. Is it UC-Santa Cruz?

That is a good point. As a Miami fan, there is no way in hell I would be rooting for FSU and Florida in their games.

I am personally loving the fact that Florida will probably finish with at least 5 losses this season.

That is why they are your rival...you don't ever root for your rival.

Rival? The only "rival" A&M has in this state now is Texas Tech...

As for the NBA analogy, while I don't "cheer" for SA & Dallas, IF THEY ARE NOT PLAYING THE ROCKETS, OR IF THEIR WINNING WON'T TAKE AWAY A POTENTIAL ROCKETS PLAYOFF BERTH - I would rather have them win than the Jazz or Lakers, etc.

That is probably news to both Texas fans and A&M fans. I guess when you haven't beaten a team in a while, they are no longer your rival?

And before you call me a Longhorn fan, know that I am a Miami fan. I think most people would consider A&M and UT rivals still.

If UT continues to lose to OU, then they are every bit the rival with A&M then they are with OU.

Sadly, the A&M might be closer to UT than UT is to OU.

My friend's roommate here at A&M is from Oklahoma. Would it have been wrong for him to cheer for Oklahoma today?

That's how I look at it, too. (Although the Spurs announcers and fans are really tough to take...as are the new bandwagon Mavs fans).

What's been stated here makes me sad I rooted for A&M against Virginia Tech. Guess I need to review what constitutes Texas Pride.

Go ahead... I doubt A&M fans really cared whether or not SMU, UH, Baylor, UT, UNT, TSU, TCU, or Prairie View fans cheered for them.

My goodness, where is the hate in college football?

That might be because VaTech was ready to take over Texas' spot in the rankings.

The thread wouldn't be complete without some East Coast cynicism. :D

Why don't we all just cheer for the 117 D-1 schools? After, all we are all Americans right?

No, b/c he's Oklahoman he's not gonna be cheering them on just to spite UT.

I remember sitting w/ a bunch of UT fans in Austin years ago, watching A&M-Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. They were all cheering for A&M strangely. What I saw today in Waco was just pathetic.

Then again, maybe they just had a bad case of bloodlust after annhilating Baylor...

The difference is pro teams versus college teams. Do most pro teams really represent their cities? Maybe some cities identify with their teams like the Packers or Steelers, but with colleges it's a little different because the teams are filled with players from their respective states.

A&M fans are supposed to root for UT because OU represents the state of Oklahoma. The Dallas Mavericks do not represent Dallas, and they sure as hell do not represent Texas. However, UT, A&M, and Tech all represent Texas to an extent. Even if OU has many players from Texas playing for OU, the whole state rivalry still exists.

Rooting for the GREAT State of Texas or the Home of Dirt Thieves & every other trailer trash stereotype...hmm...
