Brandon Fails, a 6'1" 307 freshman defensive lineman died this morning at his dorm.

Details are schetchy, but he apparently was having shortness of breath, 9-1-1 was called and he died prior to the paramedics arriving.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and the university.

    What a shame.

Not that this matters, but the kid was Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year. It sucks to hear this about anyone, but it makes it even worse when the kid had such a bright future.

    RIP :(

Footnote. My nephew who attends UT said that to pay respects to the losss, UT has cancelled the Hex Rally scheduled for tonight.

For those who do not know what this is, its a traditional gathereing that takes place each year. The last time it was not held was 3 years ago after the bon fire tragedy, and it was replaced with a "Unity Rally" put on by The University of Texas for A&M.

I have to admit, when tragedy hits, both schools show a great deal of respect for their rivals.

That's because it's rivalry...not hate. I concur that Texas students have acted with great respect and class in times of tragedy.

My condolences to the player's family but I do not believe the Hex Rally should have been cancelled. Yes, a moment of silence should have been held, but cancelling the whole rally is extreme. There will be a football game played Friday. Will the Aggies cancel Yell Practice? No, the Aggies will not. The Aggies did not cancel Yell Practice in '99 either. I know the above sounds harsh, but that is how I feel at the moment. How about moving the Hex Rally to Wednesday?
