In a word; incredible. As much as I wanted Andre to win, this was simply an outstanding match that displayed tennis at its finest. Watching two legends who know each other's game inside-out at the dusk of their career's was historical. They toughed it out for 4 tiebreaks with no one breaking serve, and the only way it possibly could have been better was if it had gone to 5 sets. This U.S Open in general is looking good with best players in both the men's and women's making it deep into the tourney. Azim da Dream
Yeah I watched most of it last night too! Man, I was pulling for Agassi! Was with a friend that knew nothing about tennis. Explained the ins and outs of the game then the guys talking like an ESPN analyst! "Yeah, well Pete is getting tired, his game just isn't cut out for Agassis' shots..." I think Pete will get rolled by Safin though...I think.
Simply incredible! I too wanted Agassi to pull it out. But the whole time I was watching I was thinking, "this is a match for the ages!" Neither one made a mistake and to hold serve the entire match was just amazing to watch. I'm pulling for the kid now! GO RODDICK!!!
I agree. This has been a great US Open! I was also rooting for Agassi, but what can you say? They both played very well and it was about as competitive a match as I've ever seen. Has anyone watched this Andy Roddick kid play? My goodness! He seems like the real deal! He's going to be special, imo.
Sign me up as another guy pulling for Andre. I hope Safin wipes the court w/ Sampras... I can't stand perennial winners.
3finger I've seen him play his last two matches (what can I say, I'm in New York and I love tennis). Anyway yes! He is the real deal. Clocking serves at 125 to 130 mph (his last match he had one serve clocked at 146 mph), has a sweet net game and is mighty strong. Safin and Roddick would be a great final. Besides it's been, what? something like 12 years since the Open was won by a teenager. I think Agassi was 18 when he won in 88'. Roddick is 19.
MC Mark- I'm with you! I remember when Agassi was first making noise on the scene and how exciting it was! Hopefully, Roddick will be able to win the whole shebang! He's definitely got some star power and looks to be the future of American Tennis!
Good...I was beginning to think I was the only one here who likes Pete better than Agassi. Who needs emotion or outbursts? Pete speaks softly, but carries a freaking huge raquet.
In my mind, Sampras is the Tim Duncan of tennis. You can't hate him, but its tough to love him. I have the ultimate respect for the man, and Pistol Pete's methodical nature and quiet demeanour is a great contrast with Andre's colourful personality and emotion. Although, Sampras has exhibited his fair share of emotion in times past. Anyone remember that match shortly after one of his coach's deaths, where near the end of a grand slam match and close to victory, he broke down and cried? Or last year's Wimbledon - where he won his record-breaking 13th Grand Slam - with his parents in the stands (a rarity for them), he celebrated by jumping into the stands to embrace them. Its refreshing to see some tennis fans - as well as Agassi fans - in the house. As interesting as the woman's game is, the men's present and future is also exciting with engaging personalities. "Guga" Kuertan, who looks like a character from the Simpsons; Roddick, Safin, Ivansevic, Rafter ... the list goes on with big names and bigger hearts. The game was shown on tape delay here because of a baseball game on TSN, so the match didn't end until near 3 AM. Despite having school in 5 hours, I stayed up and am paying dearly for it today. Without a doubt, it was worth it. Azim da Dream
Would have been a better match if they didn't have tie-breakers and you had to win each set by 2 games, might even still be going now!!!
