Since we have so many repeat topics which are discussed vigorously on here I thought I'd bring up one that I have yet not seen and that is after life. What happens after life? Those religiously inclined rely on their faith and scripture for answers to questions on what happens after death. Since I'm not so inclined I sometimes struggle, as I'm sure others do, contemplating what is after death. I really don't know what to think. Is there a heaven and hell? Is there reincarnation? Is there some type of life force which you are a part of? I've often read accounts about people who die and come back to life and they sometimes talk about having their life flash back to them as if in a movie theater watching themselves. I read a few books years ago by a guy named Dannion Brinkley who died twice actually. He wrote that he could feel all of the good and bad he did. How good he made people feel and how bad he made people feel. I guess sort of like that movie with Albert Brooks, Defending Your Life I think is what it's called. I know some speculate that it's just your brain going whacko on you, creating visions and stuff but who really knows? Also, how do you account for ghosts? Is that covered in religion? I've never heard or seen it addressed. I believe there are such things as spirits and ghosts. I don't know how that works but I believe it exists. Perhaps people who's life force is so powerful that they choose to remain on Earth. I dunno, just curious what everyone thinks about the after life.

I've seen ghost, I've seen strange things, and I've had strange things happen to me. My mother especially. I've had premonitions, I've had loved ones visit me in spirit before they pass, I think ghosts are 1 of two things, 1.) The soul and 2.)Almost like a tape record in time. Like a tear in the fabric of time and space that's recorded there, almost like a video tape.

Unfortunately, I feel that we will completely blink out of existence. But don't worry about it. Once it happens, you won't exist to worry about it. Enjoy every minute...

Weird that you mention that, after just seeing AI where they talk about rebuliding a person from DNA and the memories of them stored in the fabric of space-time. That'd be an interesting concept, if true.

Timing, I saw a very interesting report about fighter pilot training, and the effects of G-forces on your body.

When G-forces are so great that blood moves away from your head and you begin to pass out, the pilots reported the same sensation that people report in near death experiences. More specifically, they reported euphoria and they saw a bright light at the end of a tunnel as their vision faded.

I don't know what happens to us when we die, not do I care to guess, but I think the near death experiences that people report are just what happens when your brain starts to die from lack of oxygen.

For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
    27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
    28
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

I believe the bible because it gives me freedom to live life to the fullest, which is what God intended. It's true to me because I'm living it. So if the bible says you have to answer for everything you have ever done, I have to believe it. Of course, I get to play the Jesus card. Peace beyond all understanding.

I have no idea. I think that there will be nothing. I think that ultimately my life is a bridge between two abysses.

This question once tormented me a great deal. It was an obsession for a while... I would worry about it every night... sometimes not being able to sleep at all, because I was so terrified of dying. My problem with it began in 2nd grade... and only ended two years ago. It was really a mania. I read every text I could on the issue, philosophical, NDE accounts, even Biblical texts and preachings. Didn't find anything convincing. All of it seemed wishful thinking and some of it was even logically flawed. If anyone wants to debate this out... well, I will, even though it just depresses me to take the side I do.

It still frightens me sometimes. But I'm trying to live as meaningful a life as I can. I'm not certain that there's nothing after death; I just think it's the likliest probability. We're all miracles of electromagnatism and matter... and when the brain-impulses cease, I have trouble believing that anything else continues.

haven -- what's to debate??? none of us have any clue in hell as to what we're talking about. you either have faith in this or you don't. that's it. not much to argue.

I have certain hopes about the afterlife. I kinda hope it's not instant knowledge. I guess the lawyer in me would really like to spend part of my eternity in a library that contains all the information of everything and everyone ever. Obviously, I hope to be joined by those I love. I really hope there's baseball, too!

I used to believe that there would be nothing after death but the older I get the more I think there will be something. I think one of the reasons I believe this is that everything in nature seems to have a balance. Nature doesn't waste. Everything seems to fit a certain purpose from the largest beast to the smallest organism. In that sense it seems illogical to me that the life force we all share in doesn't serve some purpose after death.

lol... I actually agree with you that it's impossible to determine. But thousands of very intelligent people have claimed that you can logically prove the existence or non-existence of an afterlife.

I was going to start debating if someone took either one of those positions [IMG]. You misunderstood me [IMG].

First of all, I'm a life-long Episcopalian, so I feel qualified to talk on this subject.

I have a ? for the people that don't believe in after life. Basically, where did Earth come from and how was Man created? Who made the planets and all of the animals that walk the Earth? There has to be a God that does all this, which is the 1 thing that all major religions seem to agree on. Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, and most smaller religious organizations off different sorts agree on this 1 fact.......

Unfortunately, I have to go now, but I still have finish my statement. Sorry to keep you guys hanging but I've got to get ready for work.

saying there has to be a god because of life and the planet and everything is a cop-out. the existence of everything is the result of something that no one can comprehend. so just except it. if you want to call god the unimaginable than so be it. when u die u die. nothing. no sensations. nothing. i know this to be true because i said so. hahahahahahahahaha

I don't believe in ghosts. No offense to anyone, but I think that people who claim to see ghosts are either:

    1.) full of sh*t
2.) blessed (cursed?) with overactive paranoid imaginations
3.) genuinely seeing things that aren't there (blips in brain waves or some other psychological explanation)
4.) genuinely seeing something that is there but can be explained by environmental factors (tricks of lighting, illusions, desert mirages, etc..)

If I see one myself, I might change my mind (or maybe not) but until then, I'll stick to my theories above; especially theory 1.

Ghost stories can be pretty entertaining to read though.

As for life after death, the only thing that makes sense to me is that death is like a big, long, drunken sleep. If you drink a lot of alcohol before you go to bed, you won't dream; you'll just lie there in a state of mindless black unconsciousness. You won't feel the passage of time, or anything at all. I think death is like that, which isn't so bad when you think about it.

It's an interesting thing to think about though, since no matter how hard you try, you cannot envision yourself not existing.

I think the afterlife has nothing to do with thinking, maybe it's a timeless reality, something that has nothing to do with intellect of course...I don't know. Maybe like a nothingness, but not in the sense of nothing as being the opposite of something. Maybe it's like the true dissolution of memeory, time, and space, the "I", consciousness as we know it. Man thsi is too deep for me, i think i'll pop in some lynyrd skynayrd and grab a cold michelob.

Speaking of afterlife and things like that, have any of you guys ever had some unseen force hold you down one morning or night while trying to wake? This happen to me, it was a decisive, real thing, my eyes were open, i was trying to lift my arms off the bed...i couldn't..some force was holding me down...like i was being raped by an apparition or somehting. Now, heres the weird part that made me go hmmmmm.... my friends all experienced this exact same thing the week it happen to me...pretty freaky. I will say one thing we all party ahrd that previous weekend, so i don't know if it was a brain reaction from the previous weekend or a real out-of-this-world experience. Anyways, it happen to all of us.

My Parents and siblings have belived my aunt's ghost haunts the family home because she lived with us before she died. They say they smell her perfume every so often, and from time to time, in the fog of the bathroom mirror, the word "HI" will appear. This aunt believed her father's ghost wiggled her her toe one night not long before she passed.
I always thought they were all crazy because in 25 years, I had never experienced anything like that, but about a month ago, I was in my parents bedroom alone and someone whispered to me "what are you doing?". It freaked me out a little, but I just said "I'm looking for something", and went back in the room where everyone else was.

I have actually been pondering about the after life lately. An elderly neighbour recently died, so it's kind of been in my face.
I've seen a few dead bodies before (relatives), and they seem to be missing something (duh...). Something that is hard to explain, almost like a soul. I'm a Christian so I believe in God and I think the afterlife is a collection of souls living in Heaven or Hell.

There is only one way to prove what happens after we die, and it ain't pretty.
I can honestly say I'm not afraid to die, I think it is one of lifes great mysteries.

Yes. My mom said that it's a ghost that's punishing me for being bad, lol. When it happens to me, I'm usually on my stomach. I think Clutch had something similar happen to him also.
