Will someone please eplain to me why it is socially acceptable for African Americans to use the term? Excuse my ignorance but I just don't get it. See, the BBS even automatically deleted the "N" word.
It's not unusual for members of an oppressed class to reclaim words their oppressors use. Black people have taken back the N-word, and changed it's meaning within their culture. Gay people have reclaimed both the words gay and queer. Poor people from the South have embraced the term "Redneck."
You are correct, and I understand, but why? If it is so offensive, why use the terms at all? Within their own cultures, derogatory terms often become a term of indearment. Again, I just don't understand.
there is a difference between ****** and *****. come on fellow white people all of you whites boys should know this.
why do people care? to me, it's kind of like picking on your own brother, but no one else better mess with your brother or you will be on their case.
No, seriously, I don't know nor understand. I've heard many rap lyrics, comedians, etc., use the N word, not *****. Please enlighten me.
Not sure I understand your logic. I have two sons, 15 and 11, I don't allow the 15 yr old to pick on his younger brother, period.
***** means like that's my boy. african americans don't say that's my ******. if they say the six letter word then they are probably using it in the typical white stereotypical way. what you are asking is something more sociological, but we have to get the distinction cleared up.
I honestly don't know the point where ***** and ****** became two seperate words, but I am sure that research has been done on it by people in african american studies or african american linguistics. and trust me you are hearing *****. you won't hear african americans saying ****** to each other in casual conversation. if you can give me some sort of specific reference then it might help. I know dave chappelle will emphasize the 'R' sometimes but he is doing that for effect.
I agree and many black people I know use the word with an "er" at the end. Why is it not offensive when they use it amongst themselves?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/***** not much there but that kind of explains what I wanted to say a little bit more clearly. and maybe the popularization of ***** does have a lot to do with NWA and their usage of it. it was certainly around before, but I am just kind of guessing with the small amount of research I just did.
There's been several historical black movements to use the word among blacks to depower its hateful usage and connotation. The critical point of those movements was to empower themselves after centuries and decades of systematic oppression. Unfortunately, the media and its portrayal of Blacks has made the point of using the word among Blacks twisted joke. It's like double irony. Just keep in mind of the characters/personalities you see on TV or the media who use the words, and consider if that's your entire sample of the black population.
you know that pet name your wife calls you...... you like it dont you? Yeah, I know you do. And whats more, I know you love it when your co-workers croon your pet name ever so gently at work.
Is it racist to laugh at Chris Rock's ******* vs. Blacks jokes? If you got money, hide it in books. Books are like kryptonite to *******. A ****** is so dumb he will steal your stuff and the next day show up and say "I heard you got robbed." I just graduated from college. "So what? You think you're better than me?" I take care of my kids!
Very simple. White people enslaved black people ...and black folks are generally still pretty pissed about it. So just accept the fact that the sun will always rise in the morning and white people can't use the N-word. You don't need to get real scientific about it. Female friends call each other ***** but don't let somebody else call them that! Black folks call each other ***** but don't let somebody else call them that! btw, ***** and the n-word are essentially two different words at this point. How, say, a KKK member uses the n-word is waaayyyy different than how, say, Jay-Z usses it from a technical perspective. Look at the sentence structure, grammar, intonation, spelling ...and most importantly INTENT. The two words have virtually no similarities at this point in time. So if you can't recognize that, then that is why you are having a hard time understanding the problem. So if you can't understand that, you need to get out more. It isn't very complicated.
I think it's about empowerment (I'm no psychologist it's my take) These words (*****, queer, rednecks) use to be used by the oppressors. The words were weapons used to inflict emotional distress. Once the society sees the hypocracy, and it becomes taboo (in most instances) from the former oppressors to use them, the oppressed are more likely to re-use those words to: 1. Remind the former oppressors of their guilty past 2. Flaunting the weapon that was previously used by the oppressors
tupac said it the best ******- a black man with a slavery chain around his neck. *****- a black man with a gold chain on his neck.
