In the midst of all our (both here on the board and nationally) bickering over Iraq, I hope we don't forget about Afghanistan. Things do not appear to be going well there, and stories like this underscore that nation building project number one is in serious jeopardy and requires urgent attention. http://www.salon.com/news/wire/2004/06/27/afghanistan/index.html
Two years after the Reagan Administration began supporting the Contras in Nicaragua, crack cocaine flooded the streets of American ghettoes and hooked thousands upon thousands of addicts. Now that poppy is the #1 cash crop in the new "liberated" Afghanistan, how long will it be before we see the largest spike in heroin addiction that this nation has ever seen? I have never been able to understand the shortsightedness of American Foreign Policy, no matter which ideology is in power. Why do Presidents never think of the long term ramifications of their foreign policy?
a.) it's not safe for the media to cover the situation outside of Kabul b.) the average Joe in the US will not care much if few American's are dying.
Yeah, there's just no good news about Afghanistan at all. Or is there. See Good News from Afghanistan: http://www.chrenkoff.blogspot.com/
