My wife and I are moving out of the country in a few weeks, and we can't take our dog. I won't bore you with all the sordid details, but in case you're wondering why I'm messing with this in the eleventh hour, we thought we had a moderate to good chance of being able to take her. As early as less than a week ago, we were rejoicing because we had found a way to actually take her...........and then the rug got pulled out from underneath us.

She's a ten year old American Water Spaniel---chipped, spayed, and very well taken care of. Cool, loving to almost a fault dog that thinks and acts like she's still a puppy........but not too many people want a ten year old dog. We asked facebook and local friends and family, but nobody can help. We might get a few weeks to maybe a few months from my wife's mother, but that's a short term solution that I'd rather not explore..........her mother is getting up there in age.

It's been suggested to me to explore rescue type operations, but it seems like all of those sites merely exist to try to convince you to keep your pet, and as a last resort......take them to the pound and hope for adoption. Maybe I'm just looking at the wrong ones.

Does anyone have any advice on finding a good home for our dog? We're willing to help defray the cost of ownership.......but advertising that is the perfect way to get someone to take her for all the wrong reasons.

    Pole,

Sorry to hear this; I know you are going through a lot of pain right now. I had to put down my 13 and a half year old black cocker today and I am waiting on a call from the vet to come pick up her remains. I would definitely check into a rescue shelter. We got a 12 year old maine coon cat from a rescue shelter and my experience is that they are very conscientious about finding a good owner for the cats and dogs that are at their shelters.

Call about 20 vets offices in your area and explain the situation; I bet they can put you onto someone.

Sucks man, sorry to hear that. I feel even worse for the dog. Even if you managed to find it a good home, it's going to be heart broken after you leave.

I honestly don't know if I could move away without taking my dog with me. Even if my brother would take her, I still don't think I could do it.. but that's just me.

    Best of luck.

PS, people traffic humans all the time, i'd think a dog would be just as easy.

Yes.....I have a two year old.........about to turn three (he's gonna be heartbroken, but I imagine it would be better now than when he's like five or six). You are certainly welcome to come meet Pisces. She's kid friendly, and will swim circles around most other dogs.

Thanks to all for the kind responses.............giving up our puppy makes all the other things I have to get rid of seem insignificant.
