Pure speculation at this point, but been thinking about the idea of getting a job in the US.... just starting my research and readin on how to do it, so how does one go about it, are there working visas or do i have to go in the green card lottery, thoughts, advice and connections greatlt appreciated... If you can get a company to sponsor you, that would be the easiest way. So that depends on what profession you're in and the need for it here.
Hey Smeg, long time no talk! I think you basically have two or three options. One is to appply for a Green Card through the lottery, which is a more long term strategy. I've heard that if you use one of the firms that advertsie their Green Card services, your chances are greatly improved. However, getting and maintaining a Green Card is serious business - you really need to committ to living in the USA full time or you lose it. Next option, which I'm not too familiar with is to get some sort of training visa - I think they are H class. Lots of students get these, and they use it to work while studying. I'm sure someone on here will know about them. The last and easiest option is to get a sponsor. I got an L1 intracompany transfer when I worked in the states. I don't know what industry you work in, but I would try calling Australian companies with US offices, and US companies that have offices near you. Hope this helps. Go West Coast!!!!!!!!
I have a similar question: I have a friend whom just finished her BS degree in UIUC. She is a Canadian citizen, and she wants to stay and work in the U.S. What kind of options does she have?
This is America. You want to come here, bring your skills, work, and pay taxes. You want to come here legally. So we are going to make it as hard as possible. Might as well fly to Mexico and run across the border.
and this post did it. see you guys battling with 12 sided dice. America is a great place to live. Sometimes.
Look, I work with many people who have moved here from other countries. It is a long, arduous process to come into this country legally. Highly skilled people from all over the world want to move here, and America makes it difficult. I think if highly skilled folks that work hard and pay taxes want to move here, we should make it easy. Do you disagree that it is not hard to come here legally? Millions of people pour over the border illegally every year, but America givest the hardest time to educated, skilled people that want to move here. I think its backwards. If someone is talented, works hard, and is going to better society, we should be recruiting them to move here, not make it so difficult.
So, if you move, can I rent your house? I promise I'll make good use of your backyard bbq area...keep it nice and seasoned for you. hmmm...maybe I should make a brisket this weekend.
I'm somewhat familiar with these because it seems like Indians eat these visas up when they have a chance. H-1b visas are visas given out to foreigners who wish to fill jobs in the US in which the company "cannot find a domestic equivalent worker." Essentially, you get a company to petition for you and if they get approval, they sponsor your H-1B visa for 6 years. You can either apply for a green card at the end of the visa period (which most do) or you can leave the country for a year and re-apply for an H-1B. Also, you can apply for the greencard WHILE you are still on your visa. H-1B visas are generally given in "specialty" fields like higher fields of engineering and other areas of science. These visas have quotas on them that fill up very quickly. The quota amount seems to change every year but recently in the wake of anti-immigrant hysteria that seems to be sweeping through Congress, the quota has declined substantially. Hopefully that helps. Good Luck!
TN visa is the easiest. One can simply get it at the boarder, with a degree, 3 years of experience, and an offer. But you have to renew it every year at any boarder again. http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1274.html
Get a really dark tan. Forget how to speak English. Walk across the border. Impregnate someone and have a U.S born child (preferably 5 or 6). You're home free. Hospital bills? That's the hospital's problem. How are they going to track you down and make you pay when you won't even give them you're real name. No auto insurance? No problem! Just blow it off. If any gringo's say anything about the liberties you're taking, just call them a racist and say they are infringing on your civil rights! Remember this phrase "I didn't cross the border, the border crossed me!". You're gonna love it here my friend. Welcome and enjoy la requonquista!
