So, I just closed on a house. I haven't ever lived in a house before. How do utilities and such work? I know I'll have to get my own electricity, phone etc. but what about things like water and trash (that I guess the city does?), do I have to get an account for that or does it automatically get billed to the house? How is this supposed to work?

I guess these are questions for my realtor but apparently she is on vacation in Europe and won't answer my calls or emails. I might have picked the worst realtor ever.

Trash/Water- call the city to get these turned on. The usually want a deposit.
    Electricity- powertochoose.org.
Gas- find out who your local gas company is.
TV/Internet- find out who your local providers are.

If you don't know the answer to those questions then I bet your realtor is avoiding you :)

    New house or old house?

If old house, the sellers should have provided you with that information. If not, call and ask them.

Do you live in a homeowner's association controlled subdivision? If so, contact them about the water and trash. Sometimes trash pickup is included in your property taxes so there is no bill. If it is a separate bill, ask your neighbors if there is more than one provider and which is best.

I assume your realtor works for a company. Call them to get all of the info.

I advise you find an internet community and post something to ask them. I imagine you'll find someone who knows what they're talking about who can point you in the right direction.
