I'm going to California in a couple of weeks. I've spent a lot of time all over the state, but its always been with family, so I don't have the first clue as to where to go for a good time. I seek the Power of the ClutchCity BBS to advise me.

My buddy and I have two nights in LA (a Tuesday and a Thursday) and one night in San Francisco (Wednesday). I've done all the tourist crap and I need to know where to party. Advice on clubs, bars, and strip joints is needed! Is there a 6th Street/Deep Elum kind of area where all the hot spots are for either city? Got a particular club or bar in mind in either city?

Please, my Rocket brethren, depart some of your wisdom unto myself. :D

And whats the deal with smoking in CA? Is it illegal to smoke in bars there?

As always, many thanks in advance....

It is illegal to smoke in bars in California, but I know that many bars in LA have created patio areas for smokers.

In LA, check out the Santa Monica Promenade and the surrounding area. Pretty cool hangouts there. The King George V pub is at 2nd street and Santa Monica Blvd. near the promenade, and it's fun if you like British Pubs. The food is good also.

British Pubs are great. I'm sure we'll do our fair share of bar-hopping while we're there to get in as much as we can. What time do they quit selling alcohol in CA?

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but keep 'em coming. My buddy and I literally don't have the first clue as to where to go and what to do in either LA or SF.

    Thanks!

The Boom-Boom Room in SF (it's John Lee Hooker's club, iirc) is a great place for blues & ladies.

I can recommend you a fantastic restaurant in San Francisco. It's called the Michelangelo Cafe, at 579 Columbus Avenue in North Beach. Only about a dozen tables, and they only take cash, but the Italian food is to die for. Check out the seafood/pasta combo...you won't have to eat for a week!

When I lived in Santa Monica I used to drain pints at the King George frequently.

Yes yes yes. Couldn't remember the name.

Lynus, if you don't go there you will regret it for the rest of your life.

Stay the hell away from anywhere between Santa Barbara and San Jose.

    That is all.

Only went there once. My ex's brother lived out there so he turned us on to a bunch of really great places. Unfortunately for Lynus, I've subconsciously blocked out just about everything related to her, including cool places we went. ;)

Now....I know there are some guys on this bbs from LA, so maybe they'll have something to say.

    Thanks!

I don't know where you should go, (never been) but I can give you this piece of advice....

Stay away from talky/chatty fat women!!! ;)

Have fun. I had a friend who lived with the producers from "The Last Word" a few years ago, (I believe he came back to Houston in late 2000.) Don't know if that would qualify him as a good person for the hot spots in LA, though. (lord knows it wouldn't in Houston.)

But if he can give me "the place", I'll let ya know.

Ha! No kidding. What was with that chick, anyway? Go away, crazy lady!

Gotta do it again sometime soon. Later man.

If you like dive bars, check out the Frolic Room while you are in LA. It is on Hollywood Blvd. right next door to the Pantages Theatre. It's small, dimly lit, and crowded with "interesting" clientele. There is an enormous original Al Hirschfield mural on one wall. It was the bar used in the scene in "LA Confidential" when Kevin Spacey was sitting there drinking by himself.

Another one to check out is the Formosa Cafe on Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood. It has been there since 1934, and lots of celebrities hang out there. The food sucks, but it is a good place to drink. This was the bar in "LA Confidential" where the two cops confronted Lana Turner and Joey Spampinato.

Yet another good place in LA is El Coyote, on Beverly Blvd. across the street from the Paramount lot. Pretty good mexican food, killer margaritas, and a cool scene with lots of "scenesters". Has nothing to do with the movie "LA Confidential":D

And if you enjoy really skanky nasty dirty divy topless bars, go to Jumbo's Clown Room on Hollywood Blvd in East Hollywood (east of the 101 freeway). This has to be the nastiest, skankiest, filthiest topless bar on the planet (maybe outside of Thailand or the Phillipines). Their biggest claim to fame? Courtney Love used to be a dancer there! Don't expect Treasures when you walk in...this place is the anti-Treasures, with FOOOONKY women on the stage! You wouldn't want a table dance from any of these ladies even if you were wearing a radioactive protection suit!

This sounds like the topless bar on that episode of Insomniac where Dave Atell is in Atlanta. Its described as the place where "old strippers go to die."

FWIW, I do love a good dive. Nothing like it. We'll probably hit one of the ones you mentioned, so thanks again. I can't handle skanky titty bars, though. But thanks anyway!

    :D

Neither can I. In the 12+ years of living in LA, I visited Jumbo's once, and I could only handle it for about 10 minutes. That place is NASTY!
