So this has only been happening quite recently, within the last year or so. I play outdoor basketball on Sundays and play around 2-3 games max. I make sure I keep myself hydrated during and after the game, so I know it isn't due to dehydration or some sort. So whenever I get home I start to develop a minor headache and it steadily increases until eventually I feel like a fat woman is sitting on my head. What could be the reason for this? My friends say it could be a lack of oxygen? Others say it could be the position when I sleep, but I don't think so because this only happens after I play basketball (which is the only exercise I get nowadays). Thoughts and solution?
Yeah man, I don't know. I think the headaches come after about an hour or so after the last game. That is an interesting fact, maybe it's the air in my house? We open the windows and front door every morning though.
if its your house then you would be getting them constantly and not 1hr after a game. Imma need your pulse, weight, height, smoke?, rbc, respirations, and blood pressure?
You could be having these headaches because of exhaustion. Usually people are more exhausted from a lack of sleep if anything.
Maybe it's the sun... is it a covered court? Do you wear sunglasses? I used to get headaches if I spent too much time outside without sunglasses... the glare I guess.
I keep myself well hydrated even after I'm done to the point where I'm peeing clear water. The court isn't covered and I play until midday and it does get hot. Should I start wearing hats maybe? I don't know if it's exhaustion, but I do get at least a good 6 hour sleep the night before. Who is the Great Santini?
I get headaches from basketball too if its the first I've played in a prolonged amount of time. Like I haven't played basketball in at least 6 months. If I played right now I'd wind up with a headache. Almost a sinus headache type feeling. So I feel your pain.
Google exertional headaches, there is enough information on it. Also, it could be something serious, so consult your doctor as well.
You don't need to be drinking water, you need Gatorade. Why do you think athletes drink this stuff? Drinking plain water won't replenish the electrolytes you lose in your sweat. You'll just gain free water and that is why you see all this clear urine. Without the electrolytes, your water is not staying within your blood vessels and hence, low blood volume which can cause headaches.
OK thanks a lot for the advice guys (and Hayesfan). I'll change my routine next time I go out. Probably wear a hat, drink lots of (powdered?) Gatorade, and get proper night's sleep. Also thanks on the exertional headache. Interesting read. Definitely not going to the doctor's office though. I hate doctors and hospitals.
wow man...i used to have literally the exact same thing happen (still might, don't hoop much as of late), except it also eventually led to vomiting all night. i would pound 2 powerades before i played, and that changed nothing. really sucks. i never found the problem or a remedy, but i feel your pain. curious to see if you can get to the bottom of it.
DUDE! i get the EXACT same thing! freaked me out for a while. my doctor suggested taking an advil or motrin BEFORE i play. works every time.
It's basically a heat headache -- put an icy towel around your neck to cool the blood flowing to your head. And follow the advice of the post above -- advil before you play.
