Admit it, Cuttino Mobley's defense is a lot better than most of us realize.

I'll come clean. I thought Cat would become our 6th man and that all he really brought to the table was an instant offense mentality.

Boy, was I wrong. It wasn't Posey holding Kobe to 5-21 shooting last night, it wasn't Steve either. It was the high flying guard they call the Cat.

Now, I had heard from HP, TheCat, and others about Cuttino's defense, but I thought they must be kidding. They were right on. It was Cuttino's job to check Kobe last night, and he did fabulous. I am starting to appreciate his overall ability more and more by the minute.

Also, I remember saying I thought Mobley could not be our sg of the future with our new style. Granted last night wasn't the greatest example, as it was guard oriented, but still I did not see except for a possession early in the game, Mobley jacking up ill advised shots.

I now think he has the ability to do so, and the beautiful thing is him and Steve have both become almost automatic from 3, which makes their penetration almost unstoppable.

Anyways, I just wanted to say I was one who didn't give Mobley enough credit for his skills, and anyone who wants to talk about Mobley's game feel free to post it here.

Yeah, he has the ability. Let's hope he's consistent with it.

Cat has improved his defense quite nicely this season, but IMO Yao Ming makes his D look even better. With Yao sitting behind him, Cat can afford to play his man tighter and better contest J's.

That's the key. He has the ability. Whether he does it day in and day out is the issue.

Obviously he remembered Kobe had torched the Rockets for 46 last time and didnt want a repeat performance on national TV.

Mobley was determined to shut him down.

Im not sure if he's equally as motivated every single game. Im hoping both guards will focus as much energy on defense as they do on the offensive end.

Consistent perimeter defense would make this team very very special helping to offset occasional offensive woes.

Defense is a decision, not a skill (within reason).

As Kenny Smith said on TNT, "Playing defense
    hurts..."

    Literally.

Mobley and Francis are putting in the effort
to play defense in the last 10 games.

They've both had the ability, but not the desire.

    Until now...

The Cat's had very good defense for the last three games, and improved efforts beyond. Props to him. It was Posey who took the stupid 3 in transition with no-one under the basket last night, not the Cat. Cat's showing some discipline and commitment. Good job.

Mobley has improved every year he's been in the league. Last year he was a bad defender. This year, while he hasn't always been great, he's really been a very good defender. He just keeps improving all the time, and he works as hard as anyone. Anyone who says we are better off without Mobley is a moron . . .

I agree with the inconsistancy thing, but I've always considered that more a "tired" thing or an ankles thing. He also is in a position where he's supposed to help some, so he does lose sight of his man, too. But the one on one is pretty sweet. If DVauthrin is going to come clean, I'll come clean, too. If Mobley will dedicate himself to that type of defense every game, I think we should strongly consider limiting his minutes during the regular season to keep him fresh. Posey and Hawk can move over to SG to rest him.

Come playoff time, Cat can get his rest standing in the corner as a 3 point threat. I just wish he would be more honest with himself and his coaches, and admit when his ankles are limiting his d or he's tired and he can't go 100%. Sit down and get Posey/Hawk in there.

Yeah, Mobley is a much better defender than most give him credit for. When he really gets into it, he can man up with most SGs in the league. I think the reason he is not known as a good defender throughout the league is because he doesn't bring that same intensity (that he definitely had last night) to most of his games. He can rise to the occasion, but he doesn't play consistent, great defense (although he very rarely plays bad defense). I hope he can use this game as a springboard to developing a better reputation throughout the league as more than a score-only SG.

Also, did anyone else see that beautiful dish to Mo Taylor for the slam? That was amazing. Cat had every aspect of his game on display last night.

The only person as comfortable as Kenny when he played for the Rockets was Sam. :)

    You are absolutely correct.

It has never been about the ability of Mobes to play D, it has been about the desire too.

HP is dead on. If Mobes has to carry to big of an offensive load or play too many minutes, his D is going to suffer.

Slowly, but surely, I think both Steve and Cuttion are starting to "get it". :)

I just have to say it's been so much fun watching this team grow, even if there are a few painful bumps to watch when they play dumb ball in certain games. The thing I'm most excited about this team is, they're still a long way to go before they've really met their full potential. I can only imagine how fun it'll be to watch them then.

Cuttino has almost perfected the infamous Karl Malone swipe. Cuttino knows he won't be able to get a hand in the other players face most of the time due to his height. So he calmly reaches out and swipes the ball clean before the other player even has a chance to get off a shot.

And is it me or does Cuttino seem to be a damn good blocker for someone who is 6'4?

Cat has excellent reach. Anyone know his actually wingspan?? He plays more like a 6'6 player.
