And I remember when it was brand-new! Yikes! http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/topstory2/2605513 Town & Country mall to be demolished By NANCY SARNOFF Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle One of Houston's oldest shopping malls is going dark. Town & Country Center, located in west Houston, has been sold to Midway Cos., a Houston-based land developer who plans to demolish most of the property and redevelop the site. Over the next 60 days, the mall's existing tenants will be shuttering their stores as plans for the revamped project are finalized. Midway has not announced what it plans to do with the site, which covers more than 30 acres. However, real estate sources say the new development could include high-density residential buildings and big-box retail stores. Midway purchased Town & Country from Bob Yazdani, who bought the property in 2002 through a partnership called Yazdcorp Funds V. Midway's acquisition included the Neiman-Marcus store, which was the only portion of the mall that wasn't controlled by Yazdani. Neiman-Marcus also is the only anchor tenant operating at the mall. The retailer still has a long-term lease and will not be closing any time soon, said a source at Midway. Located at the southeast corner of the Katy Freeway at Beltway 8, the three-level, 1 million-square-foot property has been deteriorating in recent years amid heavy competition from other malls.
Yeah, I hadn't been inside of it in years. I rarely get over to that part of town anymore, but I did drive by it about three months ago, and it looked pretty run down.
yeah the last time i went there early as hell i saw a bunch of people like working out. It was weird to me. I think that was the last time i really went there.
I used to live there as a pre-teen. The arcade on the 3rd floor was great, we used to play that "Green Valkyrie is about to die" game for hours. We also used to drop lit fireworks off the top floor, but thats another story altogether.
That stinks! I liked that mall BECAUSE it wasn't crowded. Especially around the holidays, it was only 50% full compared to everyone else who were 85%-90% full.
When they put in the glass elevators there was big ceremony about it. They had James Doohan(Scotty from the original Star Trek) there to kick the whole thing off. I was a reporter for the school paper and got to interview him. It was very strange.
i wonder how that will effect my dad's bar. he owns the burlap barrel pub in the strip center right next to t&c off the feeder of the by i-10 and beltway 8. it'll probably be good if they are gonna build residential stuff in there.
I was in junior high or late elementary school when this thing opened up...it was a great alternative to a then run-down Memorial City Mall. It was packed...all the time. Then came the Beltway...and it was never the same. Literally killed it. Hard to see...hard to get to. And it morphed into this upscale mall...anchored by Neiman Marcus...but still had Dillard's. I remember when I first got married, we would go to Dillard's to return wedding gifts..and we'd go in the evening. Literally, stores were closing down at 7 except for Dillards. The entire mall would be empty. Almost eerie feeling. After my wife had our first son, she used to go there to walk...because it was largely empty and she could push my son around in a stroller. And then Memorial City Mall began its reinvestment phase...and is really a great shopping center. And I assure you...even though I know this stuff and am seemingly this interested in shopping and/or mall development, I'm still heterosexual. Thank you.
Hasn't this been in the works for several years now? From what I understand, they've just been waiting for all the stores' leases to run out. When I worked for Structure in the late 90's, I worked at the store there one day, but I spent most of that day in the office watching Jose Lima win his 20th game.
There are like no stores left on that mall. There are a bunch of stores behind that mall right on Memorial and Beltway 8. There is a La Madelane and a James Coney Island. and the cops are riding in horses which is kind of funny cuz they crap all over the parking lot. (the horses not the cops)
Absolutely correct. As a (former) resident of the Memorial area, I got to watch the slow demise of T&C Mall. Such a sad story, too. I used to go there all the time and hang out at Tilt and Sam Goody.
I thought I heard the mall was being turned into a office park. oh well, I guess it is better this way. I stopped goign to the T&C mall a few years ago, I have been going to Memorial mall more and more. They built a ice skating rink in it a year ago. It is really starting to grow.
