I for one think that Adelman is a great coach, but I believe it has been mentioned before that he cannot coach with "superstars" on his team. After yesterday's game, I'd have to say that he can coach with stars on his team but he coaches better when he does not have to worry about a focal point in the offense. With Yao the Rockets struggled with getting him the ball in order to start the offense. Without Yao the players dont have to try to force entry passes. As far as Mcgrady goes, everyone knows that he needs the ball in his hands to be effective. That, of course, only leads to ball stopping and Mcgrady watching by the other players. The argument here is that Adelman is fine at coaching with stars on his team, but he is more effective as a coach when he does not have to deal with a focal player. Opinions?
how have you forgotten 22 wins in a row last season? those happened with McGrady. we all thought they looked pretty damn good last season.
sounds more like a problem with players completing an entry pass and other player(s) ballhogging and not moving the ball side to side and working within the system. tough to peg these on the coach.
in their defense, yao is anything but mobile, which means making that pass is even harder.... having said that, if the NBA wants to adopt college rules with respect to defense, they need to adopt college rules with respect to shot clock. 24 seconds isn't long enough to get the ball up the court and do the things necessary to get postmen free and open when they're being doubled without the ball.
These are grown adults palying this game not kids. They have minds of there own.Despite what some people think you cannot go yell at your best players and expect them to just do what you tell thim too. This is not little league or college. It's a blessing to get players in this league that will sacrifice there pesonal agendas to for the sake of the team. I think any coach can have problems with any particular superstar. I think Adleman is a great coach who always keeps his cool. Which is very important when the team is looking at you for answers in crunch time. I know alot of people give him crap for not pacing up and down the court yelling his brains out, but it's not his style.
Adelman has alot of patience with his players and tries to let them learn on their own in the games itself. His real coaching is in practice and behind the scenes. He's great with young players who want to be coached.
Adelman is a great coach imo. If he gets one ring he will be Hall of Fame worthy considering his accolades and trips to the Finals throughout his career. He has had some troubles with this year's and last year's squads but only because these players don't all fit the motion offense system. And yet he pulled a 22 game win streak, as someone mentioned above, and he has coped with all our stars falling at one point to pull back to back 50 win seasons and a trip to the Western Confernce Semis this year with this series tied 2-2 against the Magnificent LA Fakers without Yao now. In all Adelman is one of the 50 best coaches to ever coach at this level.
He overplays good players, for instance TMac, Shane (after coming back from injury) and Yao. While everyone is cheering for Rocket's success, we might think what if he had not overplayed some players?!
I agree. Adelman can't coach superstars. Let's just fire him. WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL HAMMERING RICK ADELMAN AFTER THIS POST-SEASON RUN???
I haven't forgotten that but that was also a time that I and many other saw that Mcgrady truly bought into the offense. I also noticed that towards the end of that streak the team starting going back to McGrady isolations. I'm just saying that it seems that Adelman seems more effective without a player that is a focal point. He can coach superstars, I never said he couldnt, but that superstar has to truly sacrifice personal egos and agendas for the better of the team. As for the Drexler argument, yes he was a superstar but he also ran the break and had more movement in his game than McGrady does.
Wha? How do you figure? The coach is supposed to put the players in the best position possible to win not monitor their health or minutes due to lack of judgement by the player and or medical staff. Plus he can't help it if players are injury prone. As we have plenty of those.
"He overplays good players" That would mean "He underplays bad players" Which would make alot of sense then. There are times when it's hard to watch him put the Starters back in when the second unit comes out and gets us back in the game sometimes. Hey the starters are the starters for a reason and thats because there the best players on the team. I'll leave that judgement up to Rick Adleman and staff.
I was going by the "50 Gratest Players Guide" Although I do agree for some he may even be top ten quality but that's all based on opinion and rings.... which unfortuantely he has none of.
This is exactly what I was saying in my thread earlier. My question was, what can be done about this dilemma? A. Dump RA B. Dump the superstars or C. Force synergy on all parties at all costs It seems like the latter has been the choice up to this point but do you guys feel the front office will make some serious moves IF the Rox are able to move out of the 2nd round without both Yao and Stacy?
Yao - 33.6 minutes per game = 4th highest of career and lower than 2 of JVG's years McGrady - 37 minutes per game (last year) = 7th highest of career and below 2 of his 3 years under JVG Battier - 33.9 minutes per game = 5th highest of career. 36.3 mpg last year = lower than his year with JVG Artest - 35.5 minutes per game = 7th highest of his career.
