Everyone knows our weakness at 1 and 4. I am sure that the Rockets management team will try to address these issues via trades and FA in the near future. However, by looking at the available players in the upcoming draft, I think that we might be able to address the issues at 1 and 4 to a certain degree.

    Lead guard:
We are not gonna get a Hinrich or Tinsley next year. Chris Paul will be a lottery pick and we have no chance at him. Raymond Felton is a good lead guard but overrated in late lottery. If we can use our late 1st round pick on him, I am fine.

Aaron Miles from Kansas is projected as a mid to late 2rd round pick. All this guy has done in the past 4 years is to prove that he can be the ideal lead guard for a run and gun team under Roy Williams and a half court point man for Bill Self. And this guy is a proven winner. The point man who runs the show for the most successful college team in the last 4 years is definitely worth taking a look by any team who is in desperate need of a quality 1.
The knock on him used to be his outside shooting. However, he is shooting 48% from the floor 58% from 3s this year. Do we want him? I don't know. Can we get him? Yes.

    PF:
Marvin Williams from UNC and Chris Talft will be top 3 picks and there is no way that we can get them. Josh Boone from Uconn, Turiaf from Gonzaga, Warrick from Syracuse are all nice projects. Now how about Jayhawk Wayne Simien, a borderline first rounder? The guy is a rebounding machine (12+ bpg) and has range all the way to 18-22 footer. Is it worth to use our late first round pick on this guy? I know that his shoulder might be an issue to us. Any suggestions?

I forgot to add Jarett Jack from G. Tech on the lead guard list. He is a junior and will be a late first rounder if he comes out. I like his scoring skill but his passing skill is limited.

I've liked simien for a while.

pros: he's going to bring it everynight. not just waiting to get paid

cons: he's had some injury issues in the past, shoulder and I think knee his sophomore year.

Good thread, but we also need to look strongly at FA like Swift.

He had shoulder injury his sophomore year; a nagging groin injury his junior year; and a broken thumb on his non shooting hand this year. I am a little worried about his shoulder but the others are non issues.

Why not take both, and take MoT and Spoon into a field and shoot em to create roster space.

Hakim Warick is like a poor man's Swift....he's just a little bit skinnier but has some good post moves and can jump....but the problem with Warick and Simien is that they're all only 6'8. ..........how bout that Gilchrist(sp?) guy from Maryland? he's a pretty good pg, self-claims to be the most complete and the best of the ACC guards Raymond Felton, Chris Paul, and Jarrett Jack

When talking about addressing the 1 and the 4, dont forget about Malick Badiane and Vassilis Spanoulis, our 2nd round picks the last two years. The Chronicle even said some very good things about Spanoulis over the weekend hinting that he is playing VERY well in Europe and likely would have a strong chance at making the team next year.

I am not saying these guys can come in and be HUGE factors. But you never know. We have to keep them in mind. For all we know Spanoulis could be a poor-man's Ginobili, which would be huge for us off the bench.

As for the 4, I would do a full court press this summer for Stromile Swift.
If we were lucky and could land him, that would give us a front line of Tmac, Swift and Yao. Clearly one of the best in the entire league.

I personally feel that in the NBA Draft, we should just draft the best available player regardless of position (sans C). We need young athletes across the board so any position would help, be it a starter or a bench contributor.

Watching Tinsley breaking down our defense last night led me to imagine that Miles was there running the point for us. He is a poor man's Marc Jackson.

I like the FA route better, the Rockets record on draft picks has been abysmal in recent years. Besides Ming (and the jury is still out) few teams in the league have gotten less in the draft.

Swift is a prototype of what the Rockets need, an athletic, aggressive power forward. See my sig. His name is all over it.

The Rockets don't need projects, they need help in the prime of our key players. Like now.

God we desperately need a 4 who can actually play defense and get his hands on a couple of rebounds.

I watched Gilchrist(sp?) play several times and came away unimpressed. BTW, I am wondering why "everbody loves Raymond" Felton. He is a very good PG but not a great college guard like Hinrich or Wade. I have watched UNC play at least 20 times in the last 3 years and the beloved Raymond has done absolutely nothing to impress me to the point that I will say that he is a lottery guy.

Turiaf from Gonzaga would be a nice fit.

UNC has about 5 guys that are NBA ready alone. Wade played by himself and with Travis Diener, who is a borderline 2nd rounder at best. Hinrich played with Collison. Felton plays with both of the Williams, McCants and Felton. Take a look at his numbers, not bad for a PG on a superstar loaded team---at least he knows how to be a playmaker. Also, look at his shooting percentages---he's nearly hitting half the of the 3 point attempts he makes. Bottom line is: this guy is an NBA talent, by the looks of things now there's a possibility we could snag him or Gilchirist.

Who is the superstar on the UNC team? None of them will be on first team AA by the end of the season anyway. Marvin Williams seems to have the best potential at either forward position. Mccants is an undersized 2 (probably 6'2").

If UNC indeed has 5 guys that are NBA ready, there is no way that they got blown out by a Wake team who has only one guy that is NBA ready, and embarrassed by a Santa Clara team that has no border line NBA talent on the team. Oh, I forgot that Ray did not play against SC but it should not be that bad, at least on paper.

I love Jack and Tech, and I hope he comes back for another year. But I don't think he'd be good for the Rockets. His shooting has improved, but I don't think he'd be a good shooter in the NBA. Worked to improve to college 3 point range, but his shot isn't made for the NBA.. best asset is strength and body control in the air. Decent rebounder, good size... but need a better shooter and would prefer a passer with more vision--sees a lot, but forces too much...too many TOs in pressure situations. He is clutch with his scoring, though..

I see most of Gonzaga's games and Turiaf is the real deal!!!. Extremely talented and he works so hard and is one of the most dedicated players in college ball. He will definetly be a solid PF in the league.

The Zags have another player too, Adam Morrison, who I think may be a great 2-3 in the NBA one day. He is only a fresh or sophmore though, obviously not declaring but you guys should check him out.

I would love Bogut but nobody seems to mentioning this sleeper called Ike Diogu. Looks to me that he is going to be a solid pro. He is just a junior and has not shown any interest in declaring for the draft.

I see a very deep draft this summer. I do not even mind moving Motay for another 2nd round pick. We will be a much improved team next season with 2 solid picks (assuming we draft well in the first and secound round) + improving Spanoulis and a healthy Badiane. Also we could land a free agent like Bobby Simmons or Stromile Swift.

Wow we could be a scary team next season.
