I was wondering how much it cost for an electrician to add another cable outlet to a different wall for my tv.

I'm thinking of getting directv. Can they install new cable outlets? If so how much? thanks! :D

When we moved into our new house, we asked the Dish Network installer if he could install a new cable outlet on a different wall than the existing one. He charged us $25 to do it.

We probably could've talked him down a little, but we didn't.

How old is the house, and is the wall an exterior one? If its newer, you will run into an issue with the fireblock(which strangely enough is a piece of wood running horizontally between the vertical studs in your wall - Usually about 4-5 feet high). This makes it a PITA unless you want to also pay some sheetrock/painter types some money to come in and patch up the hole that will be needed to get thru it. Exterior walls have ways to get around the fireblock, but present their own issues such as blindly drilling into brick/masonry/siding.

Electricians arent usually the ones that do that, but you could contact some low voltage companies that do cable/phone work that would do it. Paying anyone to come out specifically for that is going to cost you a bit though, the $25 for the DISH guy was so cheap because he was already there.

when we had dish instyalled I had to move my cable for internet to another wall. I did it myself (it is an older house so no fire block). Took me about 30 minutes to do it. I drilled thru the stud in the attic and dropped the cable down the wall. Made a hole where I wanted it and put in a snap in utility box with a co-ax faceplate. It was easy to do, but if you have the fire block it is not so easy.

It's a brand new house. As far as an exterior wall, i'm not sure what you're talking of. The wall is above the fireplace and is at a slant from the wall in the backyard.

How much would a bit cost me? I was thinking of getting directv for the first time and have them do it. What do you think?

Having the Sat guy do it will be much cheaper than having a company come out just for that purpose.

Exterior wall means the other side of the wall is outside. Attic access makes a huge difference as well.

I did it myself too but I had to get a glo rod from home depot to drop the cable down. I returned the glo rod after I was finished with it.

I only mentioned it because the OP was saying he was thinking of getting DirecTV.

Also, sometimes you can find handymen who will do stuff like that for cheap. We have a guy my mother-in-law has used for years who installed an exterior outlet at our house for $20, and, another time, installed an outside light fixture (with interior switch) for $25.

The guy is nuts, but he does good, cheap work.

I forgot to mention that . My wife's company does alarm installs so I borrowed the glow rods from them. They donated the snap in box too :)

DTV will do it for 50.00ish if its not too much trouble. Have cash handy and you might be able to talk your installer down. It sounds like its on an ext wall, but it being over a fireplace may not be an issue. I assume you do not have a crawlspace or basement. If its a two story house and you need a first floor wall fish(line installed), you can pretty much forget about DTV doing it.

If you are getting a DVR installed, make sure you have two lines installed.

Take advantage of your bargaining power when you sign up for the service. Tell them that you need all new lines run and they should do it for free- they want that money. I've never dealt with DirectTV, but Comcast, Dish AND Time-Warner were all my cable b****es when I signed up for new service over the past several years.
