"Activists block Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins until she agrees to demands":

    https://www.startribune.com/activis...enkins-until-she-agrees-to-demands/600073230/

    excerpt

Minneapolis City Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins and Mayor Jacob Frey on Tuesday condemned the tactics of protesters who shouted at Jenkins and blocked her from leaving an event in Loring Park until she agreed to a list of their demands.

A 23-minute video showing a portion of their lengthy confrontation Sunday circulated on social media. Throughout the video, protesters rattled off demands — some of which Jenkins quickly agreed to, and some of which she pushed back on, insisting she needed to represent the people who live in her ward.

In the end, Jenkins signed a list of demands agreeing, among other things, to "leave George Floyd Square alone," support the creation of a civilian-led commission to oversee police, and call for the mayor's resignation. After she signed, people agreed to step away, clearing the way for the car she was riding in to drive off.

The encounter comes at a tense time, when re-election campaigns are escalating and residents are making conflicting demands as the city debates how to transform policing following George Floyd's death. Over the past year, some elected officials have raised concerns about the tactics protesters are using.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Jenkins said she was "verbally attacked, berated and held 'hostage' against my will by a large group of angry protesters."

She added: "Every citizen of this City has a right to bring forward their concerns, but no citizen has the right to detain and coerce anyone to do anything, that includes elected officials."

Frey echoed that sentiment Tuesday afternoon.

    Andrea Jenkins's statement:

    Andrea’s statement on yesterday’s incident:

Black pain, Black trauma, Black anger is real and justified. What is not justified is the inhumane treatment of other humans because they hold elective office. On Sunday afternoon, while attending a Pride event in Loring Park, something I’ve done on the last weekend in June for the past 20 plus years, I was verbally attacked, berated and held “hostage” against my will by a large group of angry protesters.

I ran for office on a platform of Leadership. Access. Equity. I ascended, thanks to the confidence of my colleagues to the Vice President of the Council, I led the efforts that have resulted in the first ever Strategic Racial Equity Action Plan, declaring racism a public health crisis and spearheaded the formation of a Truth and Reconciliation workgroup that will be presenting their recommendations for a full on TRC to the City Council this week. Additionally, I have consistently met with all groups/individuals to discuss what ever ideas, topics or proposals they had in mind.

I am a public servant, I represent 31,000 people that live in Ward 8, in South Minneapolis. A beautiful community that was forever changed by the inhumane murder of George Floyd at the intersection of 38th and Chicago. The perpetrator has now been sentenced to 22.5 years in penitentiary. Thank goodness the Floyd Family can begin their process of healing. There have (been) many other high profile police killings in our community since then, and we need answers related to the deaths of Dolal Idd, (Daunte Wright), and Winston Smith. I can’t tell people how to express their anger, their fears or their pain, but I do know that when your pain impacts others then that becomes problematic. I have always believed in open dialogue where people can talk and be respectful of their differences. I continue to be willing to sit down with activists, advocates and protesters to understand their policy change demands and recommendations. I refused however to be bullied and held hostage to somehow accomplish that. Every citizen of this City has a right to bring forward their concerns, but no citizen has the right to detain and coerce anyone to do anything, that includes elected officials.

As for mayor (Jacob) Frey, the residents of this City will determine in November who will lead this City, not me or any other council member. Additionally, I believe that what has become known as George Floyd Square already is and will continue to be a sacred space and I intend to do all in (my) power to create the type of social justice memorial that reflects that struggle. However, it is time to stop holding of the Black owned businesses, the neighbors and residents of that area hostage. Thanks to the 100’s of people that have reached out to me to offer support. Please know that I intend to continue to serve the residents of my district and this city to the best of my abilities.

While I agree that it was wrong to hold prevent Jenkins from leaving until she acceded to their demands she wasn't "kidnapped." That would imply using force to take her away from someplace.

My understanding is the people who did this and their demands don't have majority support. I don't know anything Donald Hooker or how much influence he has. Likely though this incident will hurt the cause they are pushing and more likely helps Frey in reelection than hurts him. There is a lot of debate regarding the fate of George Floyd Square but the city is pretty much set on reopening it and much of the neighborhood there is too.

She looks like a dude...but still she could have called the police if she felt she was being held hostage. This is exactly NOT the way to get your demands met in a democracy.

and your title used the word "kidnap" which isnt really what happened.

the people who blocked her are douchebags and she is under no obligation to honor anything she signed in that situation.

she wasnt kidnapped though and even callling it a hostage situation is a stretch.

There really isn't a figurative use for the word kidnap like there is for the expression "to be held hostage" though.

I don't know, they put it in scare quotes. that's gotta mean something, you know, figuratively.

As others noted "kidnap" in quotes or not wasn't the term she used.
