Activists protest fatal shooting of two burglary suspets in Pasadena By Andy Cerota
(11/19/07 - KTRK/PASADENA, TX) - People have strong opinions about the deadly shootings of two suspected burglars in Pasadena. On Monday, those who say the men didn't deserve to die protested outside the neighbor's home.

Joe Horn, 61, has said he feared for his life when he shot and killed Diego Ortiz and Miguel de Jesus last Wednesday. He said he saw them breaking into his neighbor's home and when he went outside to confront them, they were fifteen feet from his front door. So far, Horn has not been charged with any crime. And that's why one group protested outside his Pasadena home.

"What gave someone the right to think they could kill someone in broad daylight and possibly not get prosecuted for it?" said Latiff Sally with the Millions More Movement outside Horn's home Monday.

While the group says it does not condone what the burglary suspects were doing, they do believe the shooting was racially charged. Neighbors we spoke with strongly disagree.

"Be patient. Learn the facts and if you want to speak to him, speak to him," said homeowner Nariman Abel.

We asked if this was a racist neighborhood.

"No," she replied. "We have all kinds of races in this neighborhood."

I dont get this? WHY DO THEY ALWAYS MAKE IT A RACE ISSUE??? defending the criminals??? and they can shoot store clerks, and innocence people.

I'm curious why people are sensitive to death. I think it's an American thing.

Who can shoot store clerks and innocent people? And why are those separate categories? Are store clerks not generally innocent people?

He fears for his life, so instead of trying to intimidate the burglarsm(and if he did, yet it didn't work) he shoots to kill. Both of them. Three gunshots are heard in the call. He intended entirely to take their lives, instead of waiting for the police to arrive, he should be prosecuted.

Not to forget that he also tells the 911 operator he is going to go out and shoot them.

That said though protesting this seems extreme. My understanding is that charges are still being considered and I don't think protests are helping.

Oh great...so now the guy is a racist on top of it? Can we have more evidence than that he shot two people who were in the active commission of a felony that happened to be of a different race BEFORE we brand him a racist?

Comment Criminals get what they should get
    HOWEVER

My read of this is: This guy confronted them in the Neighbor's yard . . not his .. and he was in no immediate danger until he intervened.

Question: Are we comfortable with people going out prevent crimes?
Some Odd reason I see some geek throwing on a leather suit with some guns roaming the city looking to prevent crime . . . .while kind of crazy . . .would you be ok . . .if they indeed ended up only killing Criminals?

The group doing the protesting has gone on record stating that they believe the shooting was racially charged.

This isn't jumping to a conclusion...this is what they are arguing openly.

So... ...right back at ya. :D

Do we know what evidence the group has (or doesn't have, as the case may be)?

I think you totally misread me. I was saying to fit in you are going to have to start jumping to conclusions. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Yeah, that whole 'neighbor's yard' thing is kind of fishy. I'd be 100% behind the shooter if he shot the guys in his living room but it definitely seems like he wanted to kill people that day.

It's vigilante justice, and it's wrong. Doesn't matter what the race of the people were.

Unnecessary. Playing the race card is almost always a r****ded thing to do, and this case is no different.

I sort of agree with durvasa -- it sounds like a case of vigilante justice which is wrong. But it's unreasonable to prosecute a guy for shooting a trespasser -- constitutional rights and all, so I'd say this is a waste of time. The burglars had it coming. That's why you don't go trespassing, that's just how it is. Too bad.

They claim the shooting was "racially charged", but really what they're whining about is "they're getting off scot-free because the victims were Latinos." Lame.

They weren't trespassing on his property, so he can't claim that he's defending his rights. He has no right to his neighbor's property.

It's not the job of civilians to go after criminals, and I absolutely think this guy should be prosecuted. I don't know what the charge would be, though.
