Anybody know alot about them It's my dad's 60th tomorrow and my brothers and sisters and i wanna get him a new one.... the parties not till end of next week so have some time probably have about 1000 aussie dollars to spend, which is about 700 US what are the good brands... what should i look for so far from what i have seen there was one made by Taylor that sounded and looked great my sister is in London and she is looking too.... she has found some made by Norman
I dont play but Just from reputation Taylors are supposed to be very nice. One of my best friends has one and loves it.
Taylor guitars look nice and all, but I've always thought the sound was way overrated, especially on the bottom end, and $700 won't get you much of a Taylor. I have a Martin DM. It sounds like a $2000 guitar, but it doesn't have expensive inlays or funky woods. If you wan't to know what makes a good guitar, play the same note on the Martin & a cheap fender. The Martin will feel more delecate, any the delecacy will express itself through the resonance of the note. You'll be able to feel it in your hands, as well as hear it. My Martin cost just over $700 & came with a hardshell case. It also smells good.
Also, I think that Seagull Guitars are the most underrated guitars out there and might be a bit cheaper, but they are definately harder to find.
smeg IMHO it's all about feel and sound. And you're going to get a different answer for every guitar player out there. Take him to a shop and let him pick! It'll be a lot more fun!
i agree except.... the range in my town is not that great.. with my sister in London the range would be massive... so leaning torwards gettting her to get it and bring it back with her... so then i/we need to pick
This is best semi-hollow body acoustic guitar for 900 bucks. It stays in tune, has a nice rich tone and you can plug it into an amp. Carvin CC275
maybe the Carvin's sold downunder are different to those in the US (think some of the manufacture process is in Korea) but the one i heard in the store i was very unimpressed with...the sound was very unfull... almost tinny
If your dad actually plays guitars (and doesn't just dabble) I really think you should get him a gift certificate and let him pick out a guitar. If he already knows what he likes, it's very possible that you will get him a guitar that he doesn't like to play. My wife bought me a Strat for Christmas last year. She got everything right - right color, right fretboard, tremello - exactly the stuff that I wanted, however, I can't stand the way it plays. It has problems that I didn't discover until later and now I might end up having to get a new neck (I hate Fender warrantee service). I can't sell the guitar because it would hurt her feelings. If she had given me a gift certificate to Fuller's or something where I could have tried out a few and picked the one that was right for me it would have been great.
yeah he plays... he has a 12 string and did have a 6 string.. but that died an accidently ugly death this was a good guitar he liked but was very old and certainly nowhere near as good what we are thinking of getting him... so we should be fairly safe
I chipped in with my singer's wife to get him a new Martin. The X Series are a mass manufactured version of their more expensive guitars and they run around $700 with a case if you get the kind without the built-in electronics. His has the pickup in it because he uses it live, but it still sounds amazing. Really amazing sounding guitars despite the low cost.
I have a Martin DXM Dreadnought and seriously love the whole DM line of Martin's. Best sound for the buck imo.
hey smegg, try to get the OM 42 - PS (from Martin) which is the Paul Simon signature model: http://www.gitarren-center.ch/akustik/martin-ps.htm or the OOO-28 EC Eric Clapton Signature model (from martin): http://www.gitarren-center.ch/akustik/martin-ec.htm other good guitar makers are: Lowden, Taylor, Lakewood, Ovation Anyway, this is a great idea for a present.
Chase has a point...might be better to get him a gift certificate to a guitar store and have him pick out the one he likes. It's tough to buy a guitarist a guitar that you think they will like. For $700, if you can get a Martin, go for it. One brand of acoustics that I like alot that you can get in the $500-700 range are Guild acoustics.
I bought my last acoustic from these guys....it is a badass guitar and cost is reasonable. http://www.zagerguitar.com/ez-testimonials3.htm
