Never been to Paris, but a couple of Sommerett-Maugham books have scenes in Montparnasse and it seems pretty cool through his descriptions. But he wrote in the early 1900's, so I don't know about it nowadays.

    Glad to be of help:D

Paris has very good subway (called *Metro") system. Every part
you wanna go is quite near when using the metro. You have like
10-15 min to the center of the Metro (Station is called "Les Halles"). From there you can connect almost all other lines (there are like 12 or something) and reach all spots you wanna go.
The metro arrives about every 3-5 minutes daytime and leaves
    pretty quick. I like it.

The system works as follows. You have like 12 different metro-lines crossing through Paris and they have different colours and numbers. At each entrance of every Metro-station you have a sign which line is connected to which place. When you enter the sub you have to check the end-stations name in which direction you will go. Very Easy - maybe it does not sound so but its great.
MEN and all the french-women, delicious.

May I ask how much you pay per night in Euro?

    Bon voyage.

Normally, I would recommend looking for a hotel in the Latin Quarter (especially should you go with your girlfriend, ahem wife). There are some nice boutique hotels in the Rue de Buci. However, if you can get a 50 % discount at that other hotel...that might be a lot cheaper.

If you are on a business trip and can tell your employer "all hotels in Paris are that expensive", try the Hotel Costes ;).

As Palmray said, with the Metro, you can get most anywhere quite conveniently. There are attractions in the Montparnasse area as well (like the Tour Montparnasse, which is nice to go up on because you get a good view of the Eiffel Tower, which is better than going on the Eiffel Tower and having a view of the Tour Montparnasse). There are also some nice little old cinemas which show films in English in the Montparnasse area. I remember having seen "It's a wonderful life" with James Stewart there the first time (Christmas movie), and I think the special atmosphere in that little cinema surely contributed to lots of people starting to cry during that movie :).

That is a good area, Smeg, especially if you can get that discount. It is not too far out, as there is a great deal of crap around and close by. You will be really close to the Tour Eiffel, Musee D'Orsay, Jardin du Luxembourg, Pantheon, Sorbonne, Invalides (where Napoleon is buried), and you will also be really close to that stupid Tour Montparnasse - the one skyscraper in Paris.

Finally - and most importantly - you will be close to where I went to school just down Bvd Montparnasse.

edit - by the way, how are you able to get 50% off?

Yeah montparnasse is cool, it had the biggest literary cafe scene for a while there back in the 20's and 30's with a lot of Hemingway connections, also Sartre, Camus, and those types hung out there I blieve.

the discount is through some sort of entertainment card, the rack rate is about 200 euro and so then it is 50% off, assuming there are rooms available.

SJC - going with my sister

the question is do i pay like 80-100 euro for some 2 star hotel or ay 100-110 for this 4 star place with the discount.

This may depends on whether air conditioning is important to you. The 4 star place will have it and the 2 wont. For a little extra a night the 4 star is a likely a much nicer room.

Also as everyone already said Paris has a great metro system. From the map it looks like you are only a few minutes away from everthing.

One problem is that I believe you are going during peak trade fair season, when it is especially difficult to find accomodation. So I would say just go ahead and take this deal. The room will prob also be significantly bigger than the tiny shoebox you will get at the 2star in the city.

Smeggy, I was checking the "Hotel Artus" in the Latin Quarter. It used to be called "Buci Latin" and it is a very special "boutique" hotel. However, it is much more expensive.

Palais Omnisports in Bercy is pretty far out (I once saw a Midnight Oil concert there a loooooong time ago), the Montparnasse location is much better.

pretty far, sounds like a suburban hotel, I'd say maybe a 45/hour ride to central P, but my paris geography is waning. It might not even be close to the subway, it could be referring to the RER, which is a commuter train that goes to the further flung points

I'd go for Montparnasse if you could, it's worth it, it's a great area.

69 Euro incl. tax is a great rate. The hotel is nothing special, but the location is good, I think, and the hotel seems good enough, you don't want to spend too much time inside the room anyway, I guess all you need is a clean room to sleep. Have fun in Paris! :)
