[ABCNEWS] Should Spanking Your Child Be Illegal?
    http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3924024:
Some Massachusetts nurse is heading this campaign.
A coworker said Rod Ryan from THE BUZZ said "we're gonna become a nation of wussies" or something like that... :D
Check out the comments on that story... some of them are hilarious.

Just to get stuff out of the way, I am against a ban of me raising my kids the way I want to.

There was only a Tony Blair Spanks His Kids threads in January 2006 I found. I think I haven't posted in this here forum D&D in a while.

Ridiculous. My parents spanked me plenty when I was a kid, and boy am I glad they did. They're the greatest parents in the world and I wouldn't trade them for ANYONE. I wouldn't be half the man I am today if they hadn't raised me the way they did, and no overfed liberal wussy congresswoman is going to tell me how to raise my kids. It's one thing that they're practically at the point of banning the word "no" in schools because they want to eliminate the concept of negativity and moral right/wrong from little kids' minds, but now this?

    Heck no. Pffft.

If you criminalize spanking, only criminals will spank your children.

They should add "without consent" to the legislation.

You shouldn't discriminate freaky children that get off when their parents spank them nor the freaky parents that get off knowing that their children get off when they get spanked.

They should make it illegal to spank a kid in the face.

When I was in 4th grade, there was a mom who came in the vice Principal's office furious that the VP was going to paddle her child. She didn't want him to be taught that "hitting was right". (I was outside of the office & the door was open) funny thing..because he was in trouble for Fighting..yep..he started it. He was known for being a bully & starting fights.

I'm still mad at the spankings my parents gave me.

    It still hurts inside. :(

I am scarred for life, and I hope other children don't have to go through that.

I think it is overboard. I personally never spank children, but I would never interfere or tell a parent they are wrong for doing so so long as it is not abusive. I remember once I saw this woman pinch her 5 year old son because he would not give her a kiss. I thought that was unnecessary and I intervened and we got into a heated argument.

WOW. So... ummm... you'd vote for something like this in TEXAS?

Why did your parents have to spank you so much? Is it safe to assume you misbehaved and talked back?

    OH HELL NO!!!

yall ever wonder why asian kids are so smart?

ITS BECAUSE OUR PARENTS BEAT THE SHIAT OUT OF US FROM AN EARLY AGE!!!

when i have kids, you best believe im gonna lay down the law. im not talking about breaking bones or hospitalizing them but you have to have some type of corporal punishment. some children are mature enough to understand whats right and wrong and whats appropriate and inappropriate behavior.

HOWEVER, most kids dont understand right and wrong and whats appropriate and inappropriate behavior. thats when the paddle must be used.

Assault is assault. Weak parents do it just because their child is little and they have no fear of being hit back. The kids should start calling the police and their parents should be fully prosecuted.

Absolutely I would vote for something like this.

Yes, I talked back. Sure, I stole money from their purses/wallets. Yep, I snuck in weed and alcohol. But so what? Isn't it part of being a kid?

I don't think I should be physically attacked for it.

When I grew up I was spanked. Sometimes I can see why I deserved it but there were plenty of times I think it was not fitting and excessive. I'm not scarred emotionally or anything like that.

I used to spank my kids but I'm now ashamed of it. I'll never ever spank my kids ever again and I hope my kids never spank their children when they grow up. There are so many other ways of dealing with things than resorting to physical punishment.

While I'm not sure that it should be completely outlawed because I can see where there are times that it could be appropriate in extreme situations. I also think that there is an overly violent nature to our society. I don't think it's because of movies or video games because most of the rest of the world has all of that too. It's just apart of the way people grow up here.

My wife and I have talked about this many times because we both came from such different cultures. Swedes are taught that everyone is equal and that you should treat everyone as such. Bosses are equal to their subordinates. etc. etc. People don't say sir or ma'am. They call their teachers, elders, and people of authority by their first names. They are also in a more socialistic society and they take better care of their own people. There is less poverty and a very, very large middle class. Parents also teach their kids and treat their kids as if they are equals, even from a very young age. Spanking is against the law in Sweden and I think the first country to outlaw it. Their people all (mostly) grow up to be very decent, humble, and caring of others. It was one of the things that made me fall in love with my wife. I don't think that their society is worse off because they don't spank their kids. I also don't think that they are the way the are only because they don't spank their kids. It is something that is engrained in their society.

We on the otherhand are taught that everyone is special and different. We are taught that some people are better than others. Individual success is praised. We are taught authority (teachers, bosses, older people) by calling people of authority Mister or Misses. Personally, I enjoy some of the niceties that I was taught as a kid. I still say ma'am and sir and call people by Mister and Misses. That's mostly a southern thing though. Being in a capitalistic society, there is more of a "everyone is on their own" mentality. I think spanking is a primal way of showing who's boss. I'm the parent, I'm over you and if you don't do what I say, I'll make you by hitting you. I don't think that is cool.

We have both agreed that there are positives and negatives to both systems and that ideally there is some middle ground. We think that Swedes could use a little more independent thought and that the US could use a little more "take care of your people" mentality.

Sorry to ramble on so much about nothing. I still don't know exactly what I think of outlawing spanking though.

no it is not part of being a kid.
that has only become 'ok'- 'somewhat cool and normal' (in some parts of our society) during the last 40 years.

for the first 200 yrs. in US culture that behaviour would be generally considered the result of poor parenting or neglect of parenting, producing hurt and rebellious character in a youth.

:D Awesome, I still watch him.

They ought to run those shows on MTV instead of TV-Land network- you could do a Science Theatre take off with a couple guys smoking weed and making comments during the episode.
