UCLA race and equity director appears to wish death on Justice Thomas, calls him a 'token'
by ZACHARY ROGERS | The National Desk

    Monday, March 28th 2022

LOS ANGELES (TND) — The director for Race and Equity at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Johnathan Perkins, reportedly wished ill on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas after news broke the justice had been hospitalized.

Perkins reportedly alludes to "Uncle Tom's Cabin" when referring to Justice Thomas, calling him "Uncle Thomas."

The reference is a widely-known racial insult, meant to imply a Black person is "excessively obedient or servile to white people," according to the Oxford Dictionary.

Perkins then reportedly went as far to say Justice Thomas actually wasn't sick.

The publication reports Perkins offered a "non-apology apology" after his Twitter statements on Justice Thomas. Perkins has since privatized his account, making his tweets unviewable unless Twitter users are "approved followers."

Anna Spain Bradley, Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at UCLA, told TND “this tweet does not reflect my or UCLA EDI’s views.”

Good thing he's got academic freedom!

Ooooooh now do the same for all of those who celebrated RBG's death. Justice Ruckus Bigsby needs to resign.

If UCLA were to fire him or discipline him I wouldn't have a problem with it. He has free speech rights but to the extent he was making a comment in his official capacity yes that would be a problem for UCLA. It looks like he made them using his personal twitter account so it's probably a grey area but we've seen many incidences of employers firing employees for tweets made on their own twitter accounts.

my wife, who deals with these cases routinely at our university, says the justification for termination here is not so much the free speech issue on his personal twitter, which she routinely defends even if people say stupid things, but rather the direct connection to his official job title and duties. Her words: "That’s called the 'you’re too dumb to work here' rule" . . . . In essence the employer can say "you have lost our trust in you to do the job we hired you to do."

How is what he "allegedly" wrote showing he is too dumb to work there or a loss of faith?

Isn’t he going to die? How can you wish for something that is already inevitable

That sounds right to me. Again this is where we have to consider where the limitations and interactions of rights. Yes free speech is a right but employment at whatever job you want isn't a right.
