Obama is meeting with McCain and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on monday at his transition headquarters. It will be interesting to see what role McCain will play in an Obama administration. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/11/obama-and-mccai.html Obama and McCain to Meet in Chicago Monday November 14, 2008 9:15 AM "On Monday, President-elect Barack Obama and Senator John McCain will meet in Chicago at transition headquarters," Obama Transition spox Stephanie Cutter just announced. "It's well known that they share an important belief that Americans want and deserve a more effective and efficient government, and will discuss ways to work together to make that a reality." McCain ally Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, and Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., Obama's incoming White House chief of staff, will be there. Graham and Emanuel worked well together on negotiating the presidential debates. In May, Obama alluded to putting McCain in his Cabinet when discussing how former President Abraham Lincoln put rivals in his Cabinet. "Lincoln basically pulled in all the people who had been running against him into his Cabinet because whatever personal feelings there were, the issue was how can we get this country through this time of crisis," Obama said. "And I think that has to be the approach that one takes, whether it's vice president or Cabinet, whoever, and by the way that does not exclude Republicans either. You know my attitude is - is that whoever is the best person for the job is the person I want." Obama had been answering a question about naming Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, as his running mate, but he added, "if I really thought that John McCain was the absolute best person for the Department of the Homeland Security, I would put him in there. I would, if I thought that he was the best. Now, I'm not saying I do. I'm just saying, that's got to be the approach that you take because part of, part of the change that I'm looking for is -- is to make sure that we, we're reminded of what we have in common as Americans. We spend so much time, our politics is all built around trying to divide us." There is no indication Obama intends to offer McCain a position in his Cabinet, or that McCain would accept, but the two are expected to discuss areas where they can work together -- the environment and national service, for instance. -- jpt
Oh please, it isn't age discrimination when someone completely mismanages their campaign. Also, there comes a time when people are just past their prime so age should definitely be taken into consideration.
If that's the case and if Obama is elected to a second term, should folks be calling for him to pick a younger VP for his re-election bid? After all, if Obama is elected in 2012, Biden will turn 72 during that term.
yeah and its also funny when you make jokes about old people being only able to say hello. Its not funny but right now its still politically correct.
I never said that McCain was past his prime or that there is a magical age where that happens. All I said was that you have to take it into consideration.
I apologize for misreading your post. I made the leap that when you posted something about folks being past their prime in a thread about McCain, that you were implying that McCain was past his prime.
No worries. I feel that McCain still has things to contribute if he goes back to being what made him a good senator. I think that he sold his soul to get the nomination and had a terribly mismanaged campaign. Unfortunately for him, the buck stopped with him and regardless of who did what, it was his responsibility.
McCain is an old tired dried up politician that's been feeding at the public trough for too long. From some of the things I saw from him on the campaign trail, he appears to be in the first stages of senility. He's no longer an asset to the American gov't, he is a liability. It's time for him to go fishing.
