The "Dean Scream" -- The Version of Reality You Didn't See.. or Hear on TV
    By Diane Sawyer

(New York-ABC News, January 29, 2004) _ It was the scream Howard Dean says became famous after the media played it nearly 700 times in a few days. Not only that, his camp adds, what we heard on the air was not a reflection of the way it sounded in the room.

After my interview with Dean and his wife in which I played the tape again -- in fact played it to them -- I noticed that on that tape he's holding a hand-held microphone. One designed to filter out the background noise. It isolates your voice, just like it does to Charlie Gibson and me when we have big crowds in the morning. The crowds are deafening to us standing there. But the viewer at home hears only our voice.

So, we collected some other tapes from Dean's speech including one from a documentary filmmaker, tapes that do carry the sound of the crowd, not just the microphone he held on stage. We also asked the reporters who were there to help us replicate what they experienced in the room.

Reena Singh, ABC News Dean campaign reporter: "What the cameras didn't capture was the crowd."

Garance Franke-Ruta, Senior Editor, American Prospect: "As he spoke, the audience got louder and louder and I found it somewhat difficult to hear him."

Dean's boisterous countdown of the upcoming primaries as we all heard it on TV was isolated, when in fact he was shouting over the roaring crowd.

And what about the scream as we all heard it? In the room, the so-called scream couldn't really be heard at all. Again, he was yelling along with the crowd.

Neal Gabler, Senior Fellow, Lear Center USA: "When you're talking about visuals, context is everything. So, you've got a situation in which you have what I'd call the televised version of reality, which is not the same as the actual reality in room. You know in a situation like this, no one takes responsibility."

    Comments from network executives:

CBS News: "Individually we may feel okay about our network, but the cumulative effect for viewers with 24-hour cable coverage is -- it may have been overplayed and, in fact, a disservice to Dean and the viewers."
-- Andrew Heyward, President - CBS News

ABC News: "It's always a danger that we'll use good video too much."
-- David Westin, President - ABC News

CNN: "We've all been wrestling with this. If we had it to do over again, we'd probably pull ourselves back."
-- Princell Hair, General Manager - CNN

Fox News: "It got overplayed a bit, and the public clearly thought that, too, and kept him alive for another round."
-- Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO - Fox News

Said it then, and will say it now: Dean losing the primary was a big deal. The speech wasn't.

I appreciate that you didn't think the speech was a big deal, MacBeth. A lot of people did though. And it got more media play than the Iowa results too.

Oh, I agree. And what's more, in this perception is reality world we live, the sppech will probably have almost as much, if not more of an effect. Sadly.

Although (sorry Bat) I am glad that Dean will likely not be the man going up against Bush, that is in itself a concession to the perception is reality game of politics, and Dean is more vulnerable than others in that regard, for being portrayed as a loose cannon, etc. As I said on the night of the infamous speech, I feel that Dean is an honest, intelligent, committed man who is at least in part paying the price for having gotten so popular so early.

( But I still think Clark is the best 'upiside' candidate, and Clark gaining momentum is still, I think, the Republican's biggest fear.)

Just thinking about the scream causes me to smile broadly. It's always good for a hearty belly-laugh.

So BJ, are you trying to blame the media for Dean's demise?

Sour grapes taste so bitter, while victory is SWEET AND DELICIOUS.

I ask a very simple question to the left-wing conspiracy theorists among us:

DID HOWARD DEAN SCREAM OR DID HE NOT SCREAM?

Did you hear the high pitch of that scream? My goodness, how can we elect someone whose balls have yet to drop?

    YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAARRRRRHHHHHHHH

    Batman,

c'mon. He screamed. It is what it is. It's just silly to blame the microphone.

    Move on. It's Kerry's turn.

texxx: You obviously didn't click the link to see the video. The speech was a total non-issue turned into the number one issue with regard to Dean's campaign. So yes, I do partly blame the media. I also blame Dean and his campaign for getting off message and focusing instead on the story of the campaign itself. I also strongly blame Kerry and Lieberman and Gephardt who did nothing for more than a month other than try to destroy Dean. I blame all of those people.

Jorge, good to see you! I thought you disappeared!

I'm guessing you didn't watch the video.

And I have no intention of moving on. I don't base my support on frontrunner status and I don't base it on party affiliation. It is Kerry's turn to be the frontrunner and it will almost definitely be his turn to be the nominee soon. But I'm under no obligation to support him as the nominee, particularly before it's happened.

    BTW, Batman...

You never responded to my last (clarified) question regarding Clark in the other thread...( I'll try and repeat)

If, as I'm hearing, Clark is substantially improving on the superficial aspects of politics, given his amazing credentials/abilities, and the fact that none of the others rival Reagan or Clinton for charisma to begin with, would you possibly get behind Clark in a more than Anyone Against Bush kind of way?

Wow! You could barely hear the scream. That's too much. If that had been played the way it was in the auditorium, this aspect of the Iowa loss would have had no wheels. I have to say I'm very surprised. I agree that it was still a hard loss for Dean, but the aftermath in New Hampshire could have been far different, with a very possible Dean win keeping him in the race.

Damn. I still don't think he can recover, because this will get nothing like the airplay the "howl" got, but still... damn.

I don't have any serious problem with Clark. I don't think he's a very strong candidate and I'm troubled by his comments in support of Bush and the war, but if he's the nominee I will probably support him. If you're asking if my support will be enthusiastic, it probably won't but it's a long time to November. I don't really know.

It's almost definitely a moot point though. Kerry's ahead of Clark in every Feb. 3 state except OK, where he's only behind 3 points.

Thanks for the video. That was really interesting -- I didn't know that the crowd couldn't hear him over the roar. I thought he was just going nuts. Guess I was wrong.

Of course, I couldn't care less even if he *had* screamed -- I admire a politician for showing passion and actually -- gasp! -- showing emotion.

The TV image and sound, though horribly distorted and out of context, were pretty funny, though.

I never really supported Dean. I always thought Karl Rove and Roger Ailes were shaping the direction of the debate by helping build up the Dean mythology.

And yet the media is always so lazy. If one outlet reports a story, the others often just pick up on it with no real investigating of their own. So I'm not surprised if "the scream" was overdone.

No news media source ever really came forward a few years ago to offer the real version of the "I invented the Internet" quote from Gore. They all just kinda tagged along. I think it was closer to "I voted to provide funds that helped create the Internet" or "that created the Internet" or something like that.

Still, perception is everything, and the media grabs on because everyone was just waiting for the paper tiger to burn. And if not, they were standing there with the kerosene and lighter.

Give me Kerry or Clark anyway.

I watched the video, and it means nothing to me. I already expected the crowd to be that loud, the first time I ever heard it. Makes no difference to me. He screamed. So what. I agree w/ GV76, that a scream by itself is not nec. bad; it depends on the candidate. Unfortunately for Dean, it was not good for him.

Don't support Kerry, I don't care. Waste your time/money on one of the other Democrats, or vote for Bush if you want. FWIW, I don't vote based on part affiliation either, else Bush would have my vote, and he absolutely won't. I think he's dangerous for our country, and it appears that the challanger, barring a major screw up, has been decided. That's important to me because as long as I found that candidate more desirable than Bush (pretty easy), I will provide him w/ my support ASAP. I'm just being realistic.

The thing is, we have a created a distorted perception of reality. When you take a direct feed from just the mic, and dropping the crowd noise etc., you are missing the whole picture. You are taking things out of context. This is a manipulation. It is like SNL TV Funhouse "Fun with Real Audio" but the real audio is funny enough that you don't have to animate it.

The moment I saw the video of the speech with the crowd noise last week I realzied that "the scream" really wasn't crazy as it sounded. It is unfortunate, but **** happens. At best we can learn not to put too much trust in any media. It is all a production anyway.

Exactly. Regardless of whether or not he could be heard over the crowd does not matter. He still let out that goofy scream. ABC News must really be on some sort of agenda to try to put that kind of spin on it.
