As most of us expected, the decision to delay sending the text means the media gets the scoop. ABC's Jake Tapper gets credit for this one: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/08/us-secret-servi.html In addition to those two, CNN confirms that Clinton was given the call that she's not it, either. Combine that with the charter flight from Midway to Delaware, and this is it. Sure, ABC could be pulling a NY Post circa 2004... but it's quite doubtful. So, I figured this warranted a new thread. So, with that... reaction? Even as a Hillary supporter, I'll say this was a strong pick. Of his four "finalists," Biden was the only one I didn't have anything against -- and his experience and straight-shooting ability brings a lot of credibility to the ticket. I'm pleased.
Biden is a very strong pick for Obama. Whether Obama admits it or not, he balances the ticket by adding experience, seniority and a long track record in the public eye. Just what the doctor ordered. I also like that Biden is outspoken. Bravo!
Drudge is also confirming the pick is Biden. This is who I've wanted from the beginning, so I'm very happy about this development.
Biden basically has the most strengths and the fewest weaknesses. Both the smart and the safe pick. I think he'll play a similar role to Cheney in the Bush 2000 election. Then, Bush was the change candidate and some people were concerned about his level of experience. Cheney was the "wise old experience" to balance the outsider/change and allay any fears about inexperience. Biden will be the same for Obama.
Strikes me as a very underwhelming pick. Hillary would have been a shocker, but a very energizing pick to the democratic base, though probably a nightmare for Obama. Anyway, I like Biden but he doesn't exactly electrify the ticket. As an independent, I will now see what McCain does. I thought McCain was the clear winner at the Saddleback forum, though I am not a big fan of his.
Because picking the VP is all about choosing the most shocking candidate. OMG! Did you hear who Obama's Veep is? WTF? LOL'ers!!!11!!!!11
Biden was the best of the rumored finalists. Good experience. Not boring. Very familiar face. Thank goodness it was not Chet Edwards or Bayh. Kane wasn't that good either.
Agreed entirely. That's the way I view this pick also. Picking somebody recognizable, experienced and proven is precisely what Obama needs backing him up. Time for McCain to to make his move.
It's a good choice. Biden has a pretty amazing life story, is a family man who takes the train home to his family almost every night from DC. His son is being deployed to Iraq, and he has a vested interest in what happens there. I think it's a nice choice and someone who I think most people would feel comfortable with him on the ticket.
The best thing about this, since the text announcement was totally blown by the campaign waiting too long (once they notified Biden things necessarily followed that meant leaks), was that I pretty much got a 3 a.m. phone call. It came at 2:49, but still that's balls. These people are getting ready to launch a Democratic party convention featuring the first black nominee who is also a freshman senator - already two kinds of a major stretch according to history - and they are waking people up (not me, but you know, other people) at 3 freaking a.m. to tell them he picked a VP. That is balls out. That is major balls.
How long before this comment from Biden gets used in an ad campaign? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lknTPvH1wSg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lknTPvH1wSg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6Re0Z5xOC6w&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6Re0Z5xOC6w&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
He tried, but never caught on. He'd have made a great Presidential choice - out of the 9 or so Dems, I'd put him up there with Hillary & Obama as far as Presidential quality. But he wasn't the fundraiser or the campaigner that you need to be President, and unfortunately, that's how our system works.
