AOC climate change film flops, makes roughly $80 per theatre on opening weekend
by ALEC SCHEMMEL | The National Desk
    Wednesday, December 14th 2022

WASHINGTON (TND) — Opening weekend for a climate change documentary that included Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as the film’s most noteworthy protagonist did not make a lot of money, only generating roughly $80 per theatre in ticket sales.

The documentary, titled “To the End” by filmmaker Rachel Lears, was filmed over four years. It chronicles three young female climate activists, and Ocasio-Cortez, while they attempt to pass expansive climate change legislation.

The film has so far received an 83% rating from Rotten Tomatoes, a well-known movie-rating website, but the site’s coinciding audience score has yet to be posted as of Wednesday. One other popular rating site, IMDb, gave the movie a low 2.3/10 rating, however.

Opening weekend saw 120 theatres in the U.S. screen the documentary, but in total the film garnered less than $10,000 in ticket sales, according to IMDb.

Ocasio-Cortez’s box-office flop is fueling criticism that she isn’t as focused on her job as a member of Congress the way that she should be.

Who would go see a movie that's the opposite of entertaining,” conservative commentator Greg Gutfeld said during a taping of Fox News’s “The Five” after news of the flop began circulating.

But it does show you how great it is to be a progressive in a liberal, biased culture," Gutfield added. "She really doesn’t do her job, right? She makes movies, she goes to galas, she sits for glossy, butt-kissing interviews in GQ and other women’s mags."

“To the End” wasn’t Ocasio-Cortez’s only time starring in a feature film. Another politically charged documentary from Lears, titled “Knock Down the House,” had a similar format as “To the End.”

"Knock Down the House" followed four “upstart women taking on the Democratic establishment,” as The Daily Beast put it in 2019.

Ocasio-Cortez got favorable reviews following that movie, and despite “To the End’s” flop she appears to be getting them for her role there too.

Representative Ocasio-Cortez offers the best onscreen antidote to despair — she’s funny, a canny political strategy,” The New York Times’s Teo Bugbee wrote in a review for “To the End.”

‘To the End’ is set to ignite more Americans to take action,” another review from RogertEbert.com insists.ˆ

Was it even advertised? I never saw a single ad for this movie. May explain why it had such low ticket sales.

I never heard of it. The sooner she's out of the public eye the better though

Nobody's going to the movie theater to see something like this on a well covered subject like climate change regardless

Movie theatures are suffering. So badly they gambled on a political themed movie expecting people to show up and buy cokes and popcorn to keep them in business.

Someone needs to tell the left that people are not into their agendas

This has nothing to do with how people feel about climate change. It's about someone paying ten dollars to see a documentary on a subject everyone has made their mind up about

It was shown in 120 theaters out of a possible of ~2100 so not exactly a big audience

Doesn't seem like that.... but then again you'd probably prefer a twitter poll.....

Okay. My point stands that no advertising was done on it unless I completely missed it. I wouldn't expect this too gross much money at the box office.

Someone needs to tell the right that the country is worried about climate change - and that the number of people that go watch a movie isn't the right barometer to measure that.
