There are several threads already on Brooks' lack of assists, lack of basketball IQ, court vision, etc but to me, the most glaring problem is his ineffective defense. This guy is so quick on pushing the ball on the offense side of the ball but how come he is so slow to react to defenses and screens. Tonight he was constantly 2 or 3 steps behind Parker trying to play defense from Parker's back.... If you noticed, Finley hit several 3 pointers on both Artest and Battier because both of them were collapsing to the middle to help defend Parker when he was penetrating to the basket, leaving Finley wide open. Those wide open 3's would not be there for opposing teams if Brooks could guard his man one on one....It woudl be OK if this was once in a while, but its happening way too often and it is going to kill us in the playoffs... at 5'11 and 180 lbs, he is just too small to guard PG that can post him up but he should be able to stay with opposing PG on the perimeter...He is just really slow to react and is becomign a defensive liability... more of a reason that I think he should come off the bench as a spark plug and let Lowry start....
Do you really think there is another player in this league who can guard Tony Parker one on one? That guy doesn't exist.
yes there are....Deron Williams, Brandon Roy, Chris Paul...etc....as a matter of fact, I think Lowry does a much better job defending than Brooks.... its not that he is not defending them well...he is getting BURNED BADLY...parker was getting wide open jumpers...penetrating to the basket with little resistance....Brooks was rarely NEAR Him on those shots.....if parker was being contested, its one thing but Brooks was being completely turned around by parker...and its not the first time either.... in a 7 game series in the playoffs when the tempo slows down and it becomes more of half court game, it will get even worse for Brooks...
If defense and playmaking are two important factors for winning basketball games, especially in the playoff, AB's ability in these two categories is really worrisome.
How was Parker getting free? Was he just blowing by Brooks, or was he using screens? And if so, who was the defender on the screener and did he provide any help?
brook's defense? little to none is how i'd describe it right now. it's not a knock, it's his frame and inexperience. i know he's trying, but all the pg's we're gonna face in the playoffs, ... just a terrible picture for us...
if we're going to pointing out every single weakness in his game, then someone better post a thread on his low turnovers and his ability to hit clutch shots even when he's off most of the game (unlike Rafer). I cant imagine how this board would destroy Lebron james if he was a rocket. a few threads about his bad haircut one night and a few threads about his tattoos the next. Anything to just drill a guy after a loss...
And i think his quickness is his best defense. If he stays active and goes at them the's he's wearing them out some. the top points blow by EVERYONE, even our old friend Rafer. At least with Brooks they'll be spending more enrgy chasing him around.
I have a feeling that AB will improve his defense next season. Look at his footwork on defense. He's not the kind of player like Tmac who doesn't want to play D. He's highly concentrated and trying to read foe's motion. All he needs is time. Furthermore, I haven't seen anyone can stop Tony Parker using screen to attack. It's really annoying.
low turnover...? this game, 0 assist and 2 TO, last game 3A and 3 TO, one more 4A and 2TO... as a starting PG, his assist/to ratio is getting ridiculous... and CLUTCH huh? no matter how clutch he is, he is a 40.3%FG shooter and 36% 3pt shooter, don't tell me he always hit his shots at the end of the game...
clutch shots??!!!...did you watch the Spurs game...from what I saw being at the Toyota Center, he missed his last 2 shots....a horrible lay up attmeps when he had 2 guys wide open...and a 28 ft 3 point attempt with 3 seconds still left that didn't hit anything.....maybe you saw somethign different on TV then i saw in person
i didn't say his low ratio, but just low turnovers, assist to turnover means nothing for a scoring pg. Take his turnovers per minutes instead. If he's only getting 2 turnovers and plays 30+ mins, the way he drives and attacks the rims, then that's good to me. and do you remember that Jorda commercial, where he talks about all the buzzer beaters he's missed? It's not about making all of them, no one ever does. It's about making more than you miss. When it comes to clutch shots, he makes more than he misses, which is above 50%.
I seriously doubt brook is even 180 or 5'11. Ive meet brooks in person and hes was shorter than me and alot skinnier. Im 175 so im guessing he must weigh about 165
a few times he was coming off screens but there were times where he was being beat off the dribble...eeven if he was getting screened, that is not new...you have to fight thru the screen and stay with your man....maybe he is not built to fight thru screens at 5-11 and 170 lbs...either way he is not getting it done on the defenseive end..plain and simple....I think its pretty obvious to everyone except you who keeps arguing that its not true...
i didn't see anything different than you, i've just probably seen MORE GAMES. You can't define a clutch shooter by his miss or misses in one game. you can't even judge them based on a loss sometimes, if they do their part, but the rest of the team doesnt.
dude...you need to go to sleep because I think you just mentioned Aaron Brooks and Jordan in the same sentence
HE IS NOT doing his PART!!...as a point guard, you have to have assists...he had 0....he does not have the court vision that is required of a point guard..he does not have that.....he needs to do a dencent job defending the opposing PG.... tell me how he is doing his job?? Kyle Lowry is doing a better job being teh POINT GUARD
you can't always just fight against screens. there's a reason why their can be so effective. If the other team is running them perfectly with the right players, you're aways at a disadvantage unless you can switch on the pick and the player who switches can guard the PG. Parker scored 30 on nash, 37 on Kidd, 39 on Roy/Blake, 25 on Paul, 24 on Deron...are they not able to fight screens as well? 28 on Brooks seems like it fits right in with the others.
If you say a few, u didnt watch the game. Everey play there were shallow screens in the middle of the court. Some teams trap the screens hard and others allow the pg to gate through with the big guarding the paint. Tonight, the rox didn't do either.
No, you dont have to have assists if you're a SCORING GUARD and you HAVE BEEN a scoring guard and you grew up playing as a SCORING GUARD and your team wants you to be a SCORING GUARD. do you think he weaves through defenders and shoots with his eyes closed? I'm pretty sure he needs good court vision to do those things. He just uses his differently. He can't be expected to do a decent job on STAR point guards when other STAR and SUPERSTAR point guards can't even do it themselves. And after all that, read my post, i was only talking about him doing his part stepping up to hit CLUTCH SHOTS, but might as well answer your question.. 19 pts on over 50% shooting against Denver and a bigger more physical guard in billups...oh yeah and a WIN. 30 points on 55% shooting over a guard he's suppose to score on, Nash, including 4 three pointers, oh and a WIN. Against Minny, another win, 22 pts and 10 assists, wait let me make sure that's 10 assists and not ten blocks because apparently Aaron Brooks never assists or passes the ball, then again he doesnt play defense either so they cant be blocks huh... against dallas, another win, and a big point guard who's decent defensively, 19 pts and 8 assts...humm must be a typo again, damn statisticians keep trying to trick us into thinking Aaron Brooks passed the ball once in an NBA game, don't worry we'll get to the bottom of this...
