Before you read the trade idea, read the 6th paragraph. I copy and pasted if you don't wanna go to the link:

Dumars recently turned down a deal that would have sent one of his centers to Portland for small forward Ruben Patterson.

    http://www.freep.com/sports/pistons/pist23_20030823.htm

Ben Wallace is not even nogotioable, so Portland wouldn't offer Patterson for Wallace. Lets look at the other centers Portland might have been trying to get; Elden Campell, Andreas Glyniadakis, Danny Manning, and Zelko Rebaca. So we know Portland is willing to give up Patterson for a center, but the deal didn't go through. I'm guessing the deal was Rebaca and a cap filler for Patterson. I looked it up, and its the only one that makes sence and goes along with the salary. In saying that, why don't we do this.

Houston trades: SF Bostjan Nachbar (2.1 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 0.2 apg in 5.5 minutes)
    C Kelvin Cato (4.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 0.3 apg in 17.1 minutes)
and a future 1st round pick
Houston receives: PG Jeff McInnis (5.8 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 2.3 apg in 17.5 minutes)
SF Ruben Patterson (8.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.3 apg in 21.2 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +7.5 ppg, -2.0 rpg, and +3.1 apg.

Portland trades: PG Jeff McInnis (5.8 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 2.3 apg in 17.5 minutes)
SF Ruben Patterson (8.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.3 apg in 21.2 minutes)
Portland receives: SF Bostjan Nachbar (2.1 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 0.2 apg in 14 games)
    C Kelvin Cato (4.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 0.3 apg in 73 games)
    future 1st round pick
Change in team outlook: -7.5 ppg, +2.0 rpg, and -3.1 apg.

    TRADE ACCEPTED

    Here is our roster.

    PG:Steve Francis/Jeff McInnis/Moochie Norris
    SG-Cuttino Mobley/Eric Patkowski
    SF-Ruben Patterson/Glen Rice/Andrain Griffin
    PF-Eddie Griffin/Maurice Taylor
    C-Yao Ming/Malick Badlaine

I think this is a do-able trade. Portland is in desperate need for a center and we give them one. For Houston, we get a small forward and a good back-up PG. My only ?? mark would be the back-up center. I don't know if Badlaine is ready yet.

sorry kid but having EG as a Backup center and having one of Partland knuckleheads on the team does not thrill me.

That deal leaves us with zero inside toughness. The fact that the deal includes Ruben Patterson is enough to make me want to say no.

    Pass. ;)

Frankly, I want more range from my starting SF. Patterson for his career is 21.6% from the arc. That's much worse than Posey and even defensive specialist AGriffin (also 6'5") who's a career 29.2%.

Instead of paying Patterson $6+m/year for the next 4 years (and losing a decent backup C), why not just pick someone as good or better in next years FA field with the MLE? Especially if we let Rice's contract expire.

RealGM lists Mike Miller, Hedo Turkoglu, Desmond Mason, Rasual Butler, Darius Miles and Eric Williams all as FA's next summer. With the possible exception of Miles, I'd rather have any one of them before Patterson.

I'm not saying the MLE would get every one of those guys, but hey...we let Posey move on for MLE type $...

I think I'm with a lot of these other fans. I'm liking Cato and if we trade him I want some serious return on the trade.

Let's say that even if I'm crazy enough to consider this trade, it would be Portland that sends the 1st round pick (maybe 2 of them), not Houston.

R.P. sounds like a real "character guy". I wonder why they're trying to get rid of him? Of course I'm sure Gundy can turn him into a good person.

Ex-Sonic Patterson charged with assaulting his wife

    • [*]This is at least the third arrest for Patterson -- all for acts of violence, twice against women.

[*]Patterson was taken into custody Monday after his wife said he assaulted her at their home, said Sgt. Doug Nafziger, a spokesman for the Tualatin police. Shannon Patterson had minor injuries, but because the couple's two young children were present, Patterson was charged with a felony.

[*]Patterson is on probation following a 2001 modified guilty plea in Washington on charges he tried to rape his children's nanny.

[*]He had to register as a sex offender with Washington County when he moved to Oregon.

[*]He also was convicted of misdemeanor assault in February 2001 for attacking a man who scratched his car outside a Cleveland nightclub.

I doubt he can still play but Rodman isn't a SF. He and Rice would make a great pair of Rockets bookends forwards. One can't shoot and the other can't play defense.
