Great season. Even though we didn't win the national title, this was a major stepping stone. We won 11 games for only the 4th time in school history. We hadn't finished in the top 10 since 1983, and now we finished in the top 5. I'm feeling a lot better about next year already. Nebraska with Crouch looked very poor in their final two games, and even though they'll be at home they should be worse without him. OU is still good, but a lot more beatable with Calmus and possibly Williams gone. Also, since we play a tougher schedule, we should be able to recover from a loss somewhere, if it's relatively early. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/usatpoll.htm 1. Miami (Fla.) (60) 2. Oregon 11-1 3. Florida 10-2 4. Tennessee 5. Texas
Not good enough. In all seriousness, UT's first top ten finish (don't know bout top 5) since 83. Critics won't be happy cuz Mack "still can't win the big game." It's only a big game when Mack loses. Nice season. I think we're back.
Excuse me, Texas did beat Colorado, who finished ranked 9th in the poll linked above, earlier in the year. Yes, I know they beat us in the Championship Game (I was there), but your assertion that Texas beat no top 10 teams is false.
But they weren't in the top ten when they played Texas the first time. And part of the reason they're there now is that they beat Texas.
Who did or Florida beat in the top 10? (well, Maryland is 10th, but it's pretty obvious they don't deserve to be there) They're even ahead of us. Colorado may not have been ranked in the top 10 when we destroyed them, but going by the voters isn't always the fairest way to do things. They were playing top 10 football at the time, but because they had a loss to an average team it was pretty much impossible to get inside the top 10. Still didn't mean that any of those teams like UCLA, Virginia Tech, Maryland, etc. were better than them.
Two funny things about the AP Poll: #1: We ended up 1 vote ahead of OU, so if any writer changed their minds and put OU ahead of UT, we'd lose it. Sucks for OU #2: Apparently, the AP Voters (and Coaches) had a change of heart. After Colorado got stomped by Oregon and Nebraska got stomped even harder by Miami, the voters again flipped their minds and decided Nebraska was better than Colorado.
I'm using Freak's logic, manny. He doesn't give us credit for beating a top 10 team in Colorado because we played them when they were ranked 14th. When Florida played LSU I'm pretty sure they were unranked. LSU finished 8th, btw.
if you go by ranking at the time of the game [which I don't think is as relevant]. . . Texas played 2 top 10 schools, and finished with an 0-2 record [loss to oklahoma, loss in big 12 title game to colorado]. if you go by end-of-year ranking [which I think is much more valid]. . . Texas played 3 games against top 10 schools and finished with a 1-2 record [one win against colorado and the aforementioned 2 losses]. plus, as was already mentioned, you can't have a problem with Texas at 5 and not have a problem with Nebraska at 3. actually, if you go by end-of-the-year rankings, who in the Top 10 did #2 oregon beat? the same team that Texas did, colorado, and by a smaller margin. is ucla even ranked still? stanford? Texas is a legit 5. deal with it. good season, 'Horns.
