I notice that every year the flu makes its way through nearly every team in the league. Now, I'm sure many of you have had this happen in your office or wherever but it is alarming in its consistency in the NBA. However, I began to think about the chemicals used in the NBA. For example, non-anabolic steroids are used, in small doses, to treat certain conditions like swelling. Other anti-inflamatories also have immuno-suppressing qualities. These drugs, essentially, suppress the immune system so it won't do its job - send red blood cells to an area of the body that needs the additional oxygen for healing and increase the production of white blood cells for repair to damaged tissue. When a player gets hurt (even if it is just tendonitis - inflamation of a tendon), the take anti-inflamatory medication to reduce the swelling allowing them to play. Many take mild pain killers and aspirin which tend to act as blood thinners. The combination of all this stuff leads to a general suppression of the immune system. Could that lead to infections and viruses becoming active in players? Granted, players are in excellent condition, physically. But, being in shape the way they are can be tough on the body as well. The wear and tear is rough. That concludes today's pharmacology and biology lesson. ------------------ Mmmmmmm. Sacrelicious.

If they pump these guys up with so many supplements, etc. Why don't they immunize them? ------------------
forget the dumb pills and all that stuff they shove up their @$$ Chicken soup will get the job done right ------------------ "Wahooo"-homer I'm not only a fan but I'm also the bartender
Excellent physical strength and conditioning is inversely related to immune system strength. Running and lifting weights breaks down muscles and releases toxins into the body and stresses the immune system. The solution is high doses of anti-oxidants. I have not been sick since the mid-80's and not had a cold or flu since 1992 when I elevated my daily intake of Vitamin C to 1,000-1,500mg. I once heard an athlete, whose name escapes me, say the "flu" is another word for "hangover". Old School ------------------ I voted YES!

Have you noticed as well: The Flu is more rampant in players that suck. Very interesting.............. ------------------ C-son
Studies have shown that the immune system weakens after hard excercise. Since athletes stress consistently stress their bodies to the limits, they are more susceptable to get colds and such. That is also why people need to put on warmups right after excercise. ------------------
The other thing I've noticed is that people make a big deal about Jordan's big game with the flu (or was that a hangover?), but players do it all the time. Moochie just had a pretty good game with the flu. I've heard about a dozen great-game-with-the-flu stories by now. Players play at least as well if not better when they're sick, it seems. ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/

poor baby jordan had the flu... sounds to me like that was just an excuse to fall back on.. if jordan would have had a bad game it would have been "because he was sick" ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be"
Live, Achebe deserves credit for that photo. I pulled it from the archives. Do a search through the bbs archives for: Kenny Dance and you'll find all the fun names people came up with. The picture was from last year.
the best drug for the flu is relenza. I am not sure if it is prescription or not. talk to your doctor if you have any questions
heypartner, I'd totally forgotten about kenny's prissy defense.
