The part that made me think it was a fix was whenever the dude goes catatonic at the machine and his friends are just standing there not helping him or anything.. plus it doesn't seem like they'd let him go through that without telling them from the control room to stop..
I think all of these hypnosis type shows are fake. Imagine if that happened while you where out at a pub? I mean, what type of freind straps you to a bloody gurney and wheels you down the road into some strange place so you can get scared half to hell! And like you said, they didnt make a sound!
