I've been a gamer forever. Somehow, I never got into FF, even back in the old NES days. That said, FFXII looks amazing. Would I be totally lost if I were to pick this up without having played any of the previous FF's?
not all, remember X and X-2? but as for XII, it's on its own so go for it lynus. great game if you like console RPGs whatsoever
I was never really into them, but I was talked into getting FF7. It takes a little while, but you get hooked into them soon enough. And the neat thing about them is they play like a novel. And when you're finished playing, you can look at all the cheats and walkthroughs making them replayable. Definitely games you play by yourself, though.
Good to know. Thanks. I've read so much about XII, that I figured I ought to give it a try. I had one of them for the GBA, but the mixing of fantasy and sci-fi elements was too much for my taste. Gimme wizards, warriors, knights-in-shining-armor, and dragons and I'm all set for an RPG.
Yeah, I know. The visuals and everyone loving this game and the whole history of FF makes me think I ought to give it a try. I feel like I've been missing out on something.
Oh, sorry about that then. I misread your post and thought you were expecting to get only wizards, warriors, knights-in-shining-armor, and dragons in FFXII (which definitely isn't the case). I still haven't played the game even though I bought it 3 weeks ago (sent it to my parents house so I wouldn't be distracted during the last few weeks for the semester). I am looking forward to it based on the positive impressions (as you've mentioned).
The world and battle system are more similar to FFXI (the online one) than any of the previous FF games, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just different. So far for me the story seems weaker than some of the past games, I don't really care about any of the characters and am not really interested about how the story develops. Hopefully that will change as the game progresses. The graphics are outstanding though, probably the best I've seen on the PS2.
Quoted for Truth. Damn, I played so much Final Fantasy 3 during high school. I knew all the tricks. Even beat the final bosses with an all-imp team (Imp's armor/shields/helm/halberd + Imps = Teh awesome).
I feel just the opposite...I feel drawn in to XII far more than X and X-2. I'm not even that far in and I can already tell it's a hell of a lot better game overall than those. it's better than VIII for sure too, but I don't know about IX cause I skipped that one. I'm really loving XII so far now if you're comparing it to the old-school FFs like VI, VII, and earlier, then the jury's still out on that. but I think it's pretty apparent to me that Square is never going back to the really old style of games like with I-VI. and I don't think that's a bad thing personally, it's time to move forward with gaming... I wouldn't want to play any of those six these days. now with VII, they might make another game like that with all the rumors of a remake. and I'd be fine with that, because VII was the first drastic change in the series toward modern gaming
XII takes place in Ivalice, which was actually used in Final Fantasy Tactcs (IIRC). The storyline doesn't make any references to it though. The game is a stand alone, as MOST of them are. BTW Kepow, I felt much more drawn to X. It's still one of my favorites. Sure Tidus is whiny, Yuna is rather vapid, and it brought us the J-pop horror that is X-2, but c'mon. Auron makes for a much better "anti-hero" than Balthier. And I even like Balthier's sarcasm. Plus I like the Sphere Grid more than the License Board, and I liiked Blitzball more than the Huntlists as a nonsensical side activity. So far (I'm about 1/2 way through, maybe a bit more) the only thing I give XII a decided edge in is the battle system. I'll give the plot a pass until I see how it unfolds.
that's cool, everyone is different when it comes to subjective aspects like this. my personal opinion of the main X characters is that I'm neutral on Tidus, but I absolutely hated Yuna. I couldn't stand her reticence and hesitant stammering and just plain insecurity, I hate girls like that. that's why I like Ashe so much, she's so headstrong and confident with some stubborness and b****iness, I like that . girls like Yuna are just so dreadfully boring to me, in real life I walk all over girls like that. the only cool chars I liked from X are Auron and Rikku. whereas in XII, I actually like every single one except for Vaan...so 5 out of 6 is really good I'm not even halfway through the game yet though, I'm probably only 20% in about. so this could all change by the time I finish, but so far I love the game
They've been rereleasing the earlier FFs on Gameboy (including the unreleased III on DS) lately; same games, slightly updated graphics, added features. FF V was just released. VI is scheduled for January, I believe. I'm playing through the III remake on DS right now.
Don't get me wrong, XII is still a very good game, and maybe I'm just not looking at it correctly. Balthier's actually very good as the smart@$$. Very sarcastic, and he's convinced that HE'S the hero of the story (+'s in my book). I just hope they develop the secondary leads more and straighten out what is quickly becoming a rather convoluted political storyline. Plus I'm tired of farming areas for points for the license board.
haha, is that really necessary to play through the game the first time around, or are you just doing it to power-level for now?
In every FF game I've played, (I think X is what I'm up to now. Still trying to download 6 if anyone knows where) there is always that one mind-numbingly boring period where you have to kill tons of people to raise your levels up. It's the only part of the series that I really dislike.
I agree, it just seems to me that too many of the characters are just along for the ride instead of having actual reasons for fighting. While Balthier is entertaining what is his purpose in the story? I'm sure it will be revealed eventually, but at this point I don't see it.
I've been playing FF12 for a while. I like it. Still not sure whether or not I like it better than 6(not far enough into 12 yet), but I can say that it's at least my 2nd favorite in the series, not counting tactics.
