dallas has amassed a whole bunch of good players to pull a trade for a center. i know they'd never part with nowitzki, but say they would:

would you trade: dirk for yao?

I would hate to trade Yao, but Dirk Nowitzki is awesome, so it would be a big dilemma there.

haha... pretty ridiculous, but I guess I just wonder if you guys think Yao will ever be worth someone like Nowitzki (who I feel is top 5 in the league).

Nowitzki will not fit into JVG's system, i just dont see this happiening. He will only fit in perfect w/ Dallas becuase he is a big guy who can run & thats pretty much what dallas does

I wouldn't. Dirk is one of many very good forwards in the league. Plus he plays no defense. Yao Ming as an individual has an oppertunity to dominate a position in the NBA as a center. Great forwards are just easier to come by than great centers.

I think Dirk Nowitzki could play some center. I mean the guy is a RIDICULOUS player. As much as Yao is one of a kind, so is Dirk. Pure stroke, can drive, he's unstoppable. Put him in there with Cato, might be better!

dirk is a much better player than Yao, but I think they are pretty happy with their line up and I dont see them trading anyone else this season

I guess Dallas would do it. I also believe Dirk can make Rockets better instantly, but not sure if Rockets will pull the trigger.

Oh I think hell will freeze over before this trade occurs, I just wonder who people would rather have right now, Yao or Dirk.

I don't think either team would do this trade. The first question Nelson asks will be "Can Yao shoot 3's?". Poor Yao, he'd be lost on that team. On the other hand, if Dirk gets traded to Houston, he'd be frozen on the perimeter watching our guards' spetacular iso's and to's ;)

No fans on other teams ever talk about trading for Yao because it's unthinkable, no Rockets fans want him traded, not even the ones driven mad because of his sometimes wuss play. What's the point of this post?????

I'd like to have them both on the Rockets.

In fact, my favorite current Rockets lineup would be:

    PG: whoever (except Moochie)
    SG: whoever
    SF: whoever
    PF: Dirk
    C: Yao

How bout Steve + Cato for Dirk + Steve Nash's backup + other cap fodder?

Dallas would be tougher up front and the Rox offense will improve.

I agree with the other posters that Dirk wouldn't fit with the Rox, especially JVG's offense schemes and doesn't play much defense. That said I could see Cuban making the deal since he has such good ties to the Chinese and from a marketing standpoint this would be great for the Mavs. Of course that would leave Nellie with Shawn Bradley and a vastly upgraded Shawn Bradley. Two 7-6 players on the same team on the court at the same time would be a sight to see and I can see Nellie pulling something like that.

If the Rox would be looking for one of the premier forwards a Yao for Garnett or Duncan trade would fit more into the Rox system.

Like the poster who kicked this thread off I don't foresee any of these trades happening.

Any discussion of trading Yao needs to factor in the business side of the sport. Yao is marketable to one of the biggest audiences in sports history so even if he never becomes the 25 pt-12 rebound guy that many expect him to become, he would probably not be traded because he is just too popular to too large of a consumer population. Yao Ming is the Rockets' organization's gold mine.

I agree that Yao's marketability to a 1.2 billion person market is a major factor in keeping him but as long as Yao is in the NBA the NBA will have a presence in the Chinese market. Consider that having a championship team would also be a huge marketing advantage. So since we are talking about hypotheticals howabout trading Yao for Shaq or Duncan which would immediately vault us to contender status and bring in a very marketable star who lives up to his hype.

I would have to believe that Duncan is untouchable and that Shaq will remain untouchable for the next few years until age takes its toll reducing his value anyway.

Also, the chances of building a championship team are not good enough to trade your cash cow trying to build one.

That was so elegant and hit the nail right on the head, the Yao only fans don't care where he plays. I can't imagine any scenario where Yao won't be Rocket for the rest of his NBA career.
