I decided to post this thread in a real grown appreciation to the Music of Tom Waits. I had two records for about 5 years, to which I listened to some times. But as I grew older, I started to love and understand his work much better. I guess artists like him, dont come along very often. I now just bought his latest output "orphans" which is a 3 cd set parted in 3 themes; bawlers, brawlers and bastards and is a tour de force and amazing compilation of his work. Sorry, thats all, I just think of him being a friend, waiting in my record shelf to spend time with. And as an extra; I think he is amazingly funny as a person. I just stumbled over this:

what do you think of him?

yeah, mike davis was pretty cool in the interview. it's amazing how much different TW is in the two interviews thirty years apart.

I had a Tom Waits CD for awhile that I would listen to every now and then, but when I started working with an old Houston artist I heard Tom Waits all day while I was welding and grinding and stuff - now I really like it.

That just fits, since he's music is also like kinda welding and grinding stuff together.

tom waits is one of my favorites. in fact he may be second only to townes van zandt as a singer-songwriter in my book. as great as tom waits, and let's throw dylan into the mix, as great as they both are, there is a certain amount of stylization. with townes, the songs seemed ripped straight from the pages of life with very little decoration. check out this documentary if you heven't already:

If I just didn't like him, I wouldn't bother posting...but I absolutely can't stand his voice. This is coming from someone who is open minded to "different" music. He just sounds like he's trying to shove out a turd the whole time. It's not appealing at all to me

Try to find the clip of him on Fernwood 2Nite. Classic stuff.

    He's the real deal.

EDIT: didn't see the post above mine. Everyone watch that clip.

You can see his lyrical genius with that "frontal lobotomy" line he just improvised in the interview. Tom Waits was a badass then and still is now.

To be clear, the music is beautiful and the lyrics are great. I just can't deal with the voice.
