Basically, I'm bored... waiting for class to start. But I was just thinking about a possible late round defensive guy we could draft. The guy I was thinking about is Cedric Griffin from Texas. The guy was just as solid as Huff and actually had harder hits and was good in coverage. He has great speed and great defense mentality. This is just something to think about because being successful in the later rounds normally contributes more to the depth of the team's roster than 1st rounders alone. Didn't the bears pick up Vasher in the 4th or 5th round? Talk about a solid pick. Anyways, what does everyone else think?
I'd be on board for Ced Griff. I don't know about second round though. Depending on what is done with the first round (ie trade posibilities) we might want to look at either Oline or TE. I think we should definitely look for a corner in the third. If most of the top tier Oline and TEs are gone for some reason - grab Ced Griff (or one of the other top DBs)
Griffin definitely matured a LOT during his last two years at Texas. He was a 4-year starter that struggled a lot early on. His coverged skills are solid, and he's become a very hard hitter. Not to mention he runs a legit 4.4 Cedric's only question mark is his size. He might struggle to defend some of the bigger NFL receives. But he's certainly worthy of a 4th round pick if you ask me.
He was listed at 6'2 205 for UT, that's big for a corner. I've seen him going in the third in most mocks. I'm not sure about that legit 4.4 speed though, most sites have him in the low to mid 4.5s.
I honestly think that if we plug someone in at CB, it will come from free agency. I think that the potential defensive prospects will either be on the line, or LB. Changing from 3-4 to 4-3 leaves immediate holes to be filled. P-Buc is a hole, but Faggins is ok. Faggins did ok in the nickle package a few years ago, when we had Glenn. I definately think we need a new starting CB, opposite Robinson.
Cedric could be a steal in the later rounds, he was about as solid as a CB can get for the Horns. As for TE prospects, I wonder where D. Thomas will get drafted. He is as good as a TE receiver that I have seen. He is also a good blocker as well. Anyone know where a Mock draft with multiple rounds can be found? I've only seen ones going to the 2nd round.
The biggest thing that can help the Texans secondary is the presence of some sort of PASS RUSH!!! No secondary in the league, no matter how good they are, can thrive if the opposing QB has all day to throw the ball. Its analagous to how important the O-line is... you can have all the speedy recievers and accurate/strong-armed QB's in the world, but if they don't have time to throw the ball, it won't mean jack. Our pass rush in the Capers era was AWFUL... NON-EXISTANT.... DEPLORABLE... if they shore up this area, the secondary will improve in an instant.
Excellent point. When G-Walk was interviewed after Capers was fired he made comments about the lack of aggressiveness on D - with regards to the pass rush. He also said he thought Peek was unblockable, but that Fangio would often have him drop into coverage. He complained alot about improper use of personnel - and it was aimed directly at VF.
he's a quality 2nd or 3rd round pick, because he can play either corner or safety because of his size, speed and tackling ability. athletically, he's off the charts too just watch his INT of jay cutler, a possible top 10 pick, in the senior bowl.
I am not a big David Thomas fan. I don't think he is big enough to be a starting TE in the NFL. His blocking is not that good either. He reminds me of Billy Miller.
Not sure how Thomas got brought into this. But 6-3 245 isn't too bad. He will definitely have to put on some muscle, but he's the same size as C. Cooley, Alge Crumpler, LJ Smith, Marcus Pollard, Dallas Clark. But I agree that he'll have to learn how to block better since he was more of a receiver TE than a blocking one. But as far as receiving, he has about as sure of hands as I have seen from a college TE.
