https://harpers.org/a-letter-on-justice-and-open-debate/ Not sure if this had been posted or discussed in the D&D. Hopefully this leads to the cancelling of the cancel culture that's to prevalent now. There's a call for a boycott of GOYA going on. Why? That's a terrible idea for so many reasons. It's time to come back to the table and have adult conversations.
Nothing wrong with boycotting nikes just because they won't release the betty flag customs, all bc it was suggested to Nike by an ex NFL qb you don't like, right? I might roll my eyes at your selective canceling/ boycotting but it is America, land of the free. If ted Cruz wants to burn his nikes, that's up to him. Now canceling shows or wanting to delete the Trump scene in zoolander that is stupid. Boycotting is a form of protest essential to democracy
The President himself calls on Americans to boycott TV shows, web sites, companies, etc., that disagree with him and his beliefs. How is a call to boycott GOYA any different?
This was brought up in another thread. I read the letter and largely agree with it. I do think there is a problem with stifling of speech. I personally was very critical of the actions of Antifa regarding attacking campuses for speakers. I also think having "safe spaces" on campuses goes against the principles of academic thought. With that though it seems like most often the ones who decry this are those on the Right yet forgetting that the Right to has been engaging in cancel culture of their own. As Conquistador noted if there wasn't a cancel culture on the Right Colin Kaepernick would've been playing in the NFL these last few years.
The Betsy Ross Flag Nikes to me was one of the stupidest controversies and stupid on both Left and the Right. I thought it was crass and stupid for Nike to release a Betsy Ross Nike in the first place. It was stupid for them to give Kaepernick the power to veto them. It was stupid for people to get upset to want to boycott Nike in general over it.
Not really sure what the letter has to do with a boycott of GOYA. People have a right not to patronize businesses whose ethics they don't disagree with. That's not cancel culture, that's simply choosing to be an ethical consumer, something that brands work very hard to align themselves with the values of their customers. Cancel culture to me is about rewriting history. Canceling the past so to speak. It's nothing to do with GOYA. And Cancel culture isn't even about the intolerance of ideas. For instance, it's a legitimate point - why do we have statues of people who were traitors to our country - and fought to defend a vile institution of slavery? This article is about freedom of ideas, not about statues or consumer purchase decisions.

One of the signers, Jesse Singal, on the Harper's letter: The Reaction to the Harper's Letter on Cancel Culture Proves Why It Was Necessary I was one of the 153 signers and am a veteran of the Twitter wars. But even I was taken aback by the swift, virulent response. https://reason.com/2020/07/08/the-r...n-cancel-culture-proves-why-it-was-necessary/
I skimmed through some of the article, but I do have this to say: Cancel culture, on it's face is absurd. The problem is about open minds. What this President has done is convince people they must take a side. He's gaslighted everyone into politicizing everything. Everything must be black and white. That's simp thinking. He's the ultimate simp. People need to realize that people are not a linear thing. People change constantly. People, at least, should be changing constantly. We need to realize that the past is the past, and though we should not glorify certain things, if we educate ourselves on the past more, and we allow ourselves to keep a continual open mind, the future CAN be better. The future will not, however, be better if we start stifling people based on their opinions. It will be not better if we do not allow ourselves to change our opinions. It will not be better if we do not start treating each other with respect and kindness. The future will suck if we refuse to do these things while continuing to wipe our hands clean of everything we disagree with, or think is wrong along the way. History has a funny way of proving us wrong on each simple turn our journey takes.
Cancel culture is a logical extension of American freedom of speech. Make no mistake, if a corporation spending money to buy political candidates is freedom of speech so to is my right to buy or not buy any product for any reason. The only speech conservatives are really concerned with is hate speech because they want the freedom to espouse hateful rhetoric without consequence. As I mentioned in another thread, conservatives are the architects of cancel culture. It just wasn't called that when they decided to ruin the Dixie Chicks and run them out of the music industry. It's just another instance where conservatives are full of it.
This is correct, except that "cancel culture" isn't just for the rich and powerful, it's also for bassos Trigimom who like to pretend their old white boomer status makes them such.
I disagree completely. it's not only about companies or products it's also about people losing there livelihood for things they might have said 5 years ago or for maybe having a bad day. I like Charles Blow but this makes no sense if its about free speech why are they getting canceled in the 1st place? I have no problem with boycotting but I have a huge issue with people finding anything that remotely could be offensive to start going in on and wanting to cancel them..
