man I remember this guy parading around the major media outlets right before the Iraq war, it is starting to look more and more like a lot of those guys who were vehement about the invasion of Iraq had financial or personal interests lined up on the bet that it would happen. It pains me to think that it is a possible that an entire war campaign was waged by powerful individuals in place to benefit themselves financially at the death of others, including thousands of Americans and close to a million Iraqi. Maybe I am still in denial about it all, but it is really horrifying to think that our country can be so easily manipulated for the interests of the very few, but then again the stimulus handout to Wall Street is pushing me closer and closer to that realization :(

Nothing new under the sun. The powerful and rich always get what they want.

True. It has been that way, just about everywhere, for centuries. The real shame, in this case, is that we were supposed to be different.

    more.

[rquoter]OSLO — Peter W. Galbraith, an influential former American ambassador, is a powerful voice on Iraq who helped shape the views of policy makers like Joseph R. Biden Jr. and John Kerry. [/rquoter]

Through out history, there have never been a country really run by the ordinary people. Sure three are a few ordinary people who make it to the high offices in this country, but it will always be a tiny percentage. Without the suppor of the rich and powerful, a politician will not make it to the top in any country 99.9% of the time. Were the founding fathers of this country ordinary people?

I think you misunderstood me - the ideals of this country, as well as the original theory behind our system of governance, are intended to prevent the wealthy and powerful from abusing their position for their own personal benefit when that benefit comes at the expense of everyone else.

The original framers of the Constitution (most of them, anyway) intended for the United States to be different from countries where the wealthy and privileged, those blessed with their position by birth, could limit the freedoms of those without a similar blessing (they were thinking of eighteenth century England in particular, but were also thinking in a more idealistic sense).

Now, all we can really do is talk about that ideal because it never came to fruition. A lot of people, despite reality, still believe it exists.
