from the washinton times, this amazing quote from a Kerry interview on CNN in 1997: "We know we can't count on the French. We know we can't count on the Russians. We know that Iraq is a danger to the United States, and we reserve the right to take pre-emptive action whenever we feel it's in our national interest." http://insider.washingtontimes.com/articles/normal.php?StoryID=20040923-114740-9747r where did that guy go? he's certainly not running for president this year. what? oh yeah, 9/11 changed everything...
2000 Debate http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2000b.html BUSH:" I don't think so. I think what we need to do is convince people who live in the lands they live in to build the nations. Maybe I'm missing something here. I mean, we're going to have kind of a nation building core from America? Absolutely not. Our military is meant to fight and win war. That's what it's meant to do. And when it gets overextended, morale drops. I strongly believe we need to have a military presence in the peninsula, not only to keep the peace in the peninsula, but to keep regional stability. And I strongly believe we need to keep a presence in NATO, but I'm going to be judicious as to how to use the military. It needs to be in our vital interest, the mission needs to be clear, and the extra strategy obvious."
Troy...that's not a flip flop. That's George W. Bush, doing a backflip and landing on his head. Oh yeah...I forgot...9/11 changed everything.
Keywords, whenever we feel it's in our national interest. The Bush administration sold us (and Congress) a bill of goods called WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. They said that this was against our national interest and Congress authorized the President do take action accordingly. But there were no weapons of mass destruction found. So the reason for the invasion of Iraq being in our national interest was a sham. The problem is not with Kerry, it's with Bush.
God money i'll do anything for you. God money just tell me what you want me to. God money nail me up against the wall. God money don't want everything he wants it all. No you can't take it No you can't take it No you can't take that away from me Head like a hole. Black as your soul. I'd rather die than give you control. Bow down before the one you serve. You're going to get what you deserve. God money's not looking for the cure. God money's not concerned with the sick amongst the pure. God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised. God money's not one to choose ---------------- Ah!!! That's much better! Have a nice weekend all!
... which could arrive in your fair city via a briefcase or a baby doll or a food package anticipatory to being unleased over your city. Nuclear is one thing but there are many alternatives.
True those are weapons of mass destruction, but thanks for purposely missing the point. What country would you like to invade because of those? None, that would be silly, right?
But they didn't find chemical or biological WMDs either. Add that to the fact that we have found that Saddam did not have ties to Al Qaeda and even if Iraq DID produce more WMDs, there was virtually no chance that any of them would have ended up in America. War is one thing, but there were many alternatives.
But Kerry looks French! Please continue dredging up useless quotes to prove Kerry has changed his mind during his life.
iirc that was 1998 when the US told the inspectors to leave or take a chance or being bombed. After Operation Desert Fox, Saddam refused to let the inspectors return.
in fairness, there's seems to be some doubt about the veracity of the quote i started the thread with. it certainly sounds/ed plausible, but until we know for sure, i'll w/hold judgement. http://powerlineblog.com/archives/007951.php -- A transcript of the 1997 CNN show has surfaced via Lexis/Nexis, and, while it has some similar comments by Kerry, it does not include the language quoted above from King's tape. So what gives? I don't know; for now, we're suspending judgment. Congressman King was on the show himself, so it's not like someone handed him the tape in an envelope at a livestock show. No doubt we'll learn more soon. In the meantime, we won't add this one to Kerry's Hall of Fame collection of flip-flops.
Isn’t the whole “flip-flop” thing played out by now? Especially when Bush (as stated numerous times) is a notorious “flip-flopper” in his own right... http://www.americanprogressaction.org/site/pp.asp?c=klLWJcP7H&b=118263
Unfortunately, Kerry has taken this game to a remarkably new level (forgive the sports cliche). Because I have been disappointed in some of Bush the Younger's policies (particularly economic), I have been (and still am) considering a party switch this year. However, Kerry gives me nothing that is positive, only negatives and hindsight. Pardon me, but I want a President with foresight and a clear, optimistic vision of the American future with positive, attainable goals on how to get there. So far, it appears I will vote for the status quo and look forward to a 2008 election in which our American parties field candidates who are worthy of being President.
