OK, so on Thursday I'm surfing around the web at work when I come across a trailer for a flick called "A Day Without a Mexican." After watching the clip and laughing with hysteria, I come to the conclusion that it is a made-up trailer for a fictional movie (created as a 3 minute piece of satire about mexican racial stereotypes). I e-mail the clip to my friends and they too think its a joke. Then my sister replied yesterday and said the movie was real and that we should go see it this weekend. (That explains why I recognized "Evie" from "Out of This World" in the clip on Thursday. I thought it was odd that a real actor would do a fictional clip.) Anyways, we went and saw this movie today. Interesting, to say the least. It had its funny parts, but it seemed WAY too slanted towards convincing America how integral Mexicans were to our way of life. Actually, the film tried to show how Mexicans were an important part of California's economy, b/c of their role in "grunt-work" type jobs, like car washes, gas stations, selling fruits and vegetables, waiters, kitchen staff, etc. However, outside of Cali and TX, I don't think this movie means much. I can just picture people in Iowa watching this movie and thinking "big freakin' deal" I'm curious as to where all this movie was released. Anyone else see it? Any thoughts? It had a very Michael Moore feel to it, in trying to railroad an agenda in a very blunt way. I came away very unimpressed and thought the premise was GREAT, but the filmmakers dropped the ball in the actual implementation.
I just saw the trailer here: http://www.esmas.com/adaywithoutamexican/index1.htm The trailer was funny! I read the reviews at Yahoo Movies and it gets mix reviews (C+). Almost a B- ! Some like it (both white and mexicans; because it's really trying to make fun of Whites; the satirical purpose), some dislike it (because it stereotypes), and some think the film could have been better (not because of stereotypes, but because the acting isn't very good). Personally, I think it could have been better if they had Paul Rodriguez in it. Maybe he's the only one left behind, or some kind of twist like that.... http://www.paulrodriguez.com/ Regardless of what you think of the film. IMO, it's provocative for good reasons...and it will make people really think about this issue in a larger sense. And that's good. Here's two posts from imdb.com that I agree with... "The ads were done so that any reasonably intelligent person could see the tongue-in-cheek manner in which the ad campaign was carried out, and those who couldn't, well... they'd probably go see the movie just so they could be even more angry." "The film is actually part mockumentary, part sci-fi & B-movie parody, and part social commentary."
yup that movie is very true. my gf is mexican and without her who would do all the cooking and cleaning around the apartment.
I've heard of it, seen billboards, and a trailer. I have reservations about it, becuase it seems like it's saying that Whites need Mexicans to do their dirty work(as if that's the only contribution that Mexican immigrants make in this society.) That was my concern, but I haven't seen the movie so I can't really condemn it.
