I know this is long...I am asking you all to read it anyways. If you don't, cool, but I hope you do.

When the Yao Only, Steve Only, etc. crap started, I was among those who said it would all blow over, it was no big deal, it was easy to overlook, etc.

Clearly I was wrong. I've almost had all I can take. I am asking, no...I am begging people in here to bury the hatchet. I love this site. I don't live in Houston, and this is the only thing I get similar to water cooler converstaions about my team. I made this my home site a few months back, because it has, in many ways, become a sort of community for me, and the Rockets are the core of that community. At least they used to be.

I have been here a few years, and there have always been divisions along certain lines, but it has never been as divisive as it is now. That's natural, I suppose, because we have so many more people that it's easier to treat posters as representing a specified agenda rather than as indivduals. But it's gotten to the point where even people who are entirely neutral cannot stay out of the fray, or rather the only way to do so is as many have already sone, and simply stop posting in this forum. I have really tried to avoid taking that step, because, as I said, this is my only outlet for talking Rockets...but I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking about just giving up.

This is not because I object to the voicing of different opinions, favorites, and strategies, this is because it has become so laced with animosity that the point is no monger to voice one's own opinion, but to ridicule/shout down another's. That is no fun for anyone, and this place is supposed to be fun. In the D&D, we are discussing life and death issues, and I fully understand why people take it so seriously that it can supercede getting along, but this?!!? Here!?!? This is about BASKETBALL! This is about what we have in common, the Rockets, not what we have in contrast.

It has gotten to the point where the powers that be around here are taking action to try and rectify the situation, but A) That doesn't say much about us as adults, and B) There is only so much they can do, and they can only treat the symptoms, not the problem. The problem as I see it is that people have gotten so entrenched in their positions on certain issues that they see contrary opinion as an attack or an affront. That people have gotten so childish and petty that they feel compelled to attack other posters merely for having different priorities. That we seem to care most about assessing blame...for the problems in here and on the team...than we do about finding solutions which work for all of us. We have gotten so childish that we have labesl for each other, so we can dismiss and ridicule them in lumps. Most of us are adults, and this is ridiculous. I used to let my roomies read many of the posts in here, but even they have lately rolled their eyes at our interaction, wondering how we can be so immature over differences about basketball, and with people who root for the same teams...it boggles the mind.

Some people will say it's not gotten all that bad, but as someone who's tried to stay above it, and been repeatedly dragged into YOF vs AYOF nitpicking contests, I can tell you that it eventually leaves one with 2 options; Take part, which I hate to do, and see threads which you feel are important get derailed into partisan bickering, or simply stop posting. Too many quality posters have given up and taken the latter route, and I'm about to join them. I do not say this as a threat..'Shape up or you'll lose the wonder that is ME!'...but as a canary in the mine kind of warning. I am not assuming that most posters here see me as a great poster, but I do think most see me as a neutral one on the divisive basketball issues, and if I, as another neutral poster give up, I am sure that others will eventually do so, and soon all you will have is 2 sides hurling invective from behind well established lines of demarkation. Again, that may be inevitable on political or religious issues, but on basketball issues, it's just pathetic.

So, please...I beg you, for my sake, for my ability to continue to have a Rockets basketball outlet, for others like me, and for each and every one of us...please get over this sandbox mentality.

To those who hurl the Yao Only label with reckless abandon, please ask yourselves what dies and what does not qualify as a legitimate reason for becoming a Rockets fan...is there such a thing? I became a Niners fan cause I liked their uniforms, for God's sake, what's wrong with following one player and, for a time, finding your primary interest in that player. Hopefully eventually many of those will meld into Rockets; fans just as we all did, if they are not continually forced to defend their position.

To those who are here mainly to follwo Yao's carrer, please have sensitivity for the fact that this is a franchise who's last star center chose to leave us, who feel a bit sensistive about the issue of team loyalty as a result, and who feel somewhat annoyed when they feel that many of you are here only because Yao is here, and if Yao were to leave tomorrow, you'd be gone too. It is hard, therefore, to feel a bond with people in that position.

And to both parties...so long as you are most concerened with pointing out the failings of the other side...so long as you are intent on showing that they are in the wrong, and you are in the right...so long as you treat other posters as members of a collective rather than address them as individuals, it's only going to get worse. The alternative is imperfect...with so many posters we're going to find other annoying...but if we concentrate on what unites us rather than what divides us, if we let go of silly designations and definitions of 'true fans', if we deal with positions which we don;t agree with by either reasoned argument, while trying to see the value in their position, or simply ignoring them, this can be a great, great place again. But if we hang on to bitterness and I told you so attitudes, it's going to be a place where neutral posters choose not to be.

I am not saying do it or else I leve, for one thing because for some posters, that would inspire the opposite of what I'm after merely to achieve my departure ( ;) ), and for most others it won't mean a damned thing. I don't assign myself any special status other than one who has no vested interest in either side of this debate, has tried to stay out of it, and has found that so impossible and so annoying that I'm about done. Please let;'s stop acting like bickering children, forcing Clutch and others to find ways of keeping order in class...let's be adult, remember what we're here for, and find ways of seeing value in each other, or merely ignoring it. This may sound like a " Why Can't We Be Friends" kind of thing, but that attitude is only silly for the world of political, economic and religious barriers. For a basketbal fan site, it should be well within our grasp. Stop the labels, stop the petty pot shots, stop the animosity, and keep this site the haven for Rockets' fans it has been for so long. Above all, let's be adults.

Sorry this was so long, but this place is important to me, and I didn't want to give it up without trying hard to help fix the problem. Thanks for reading, even if you disagree. Sorry if it sounds preachy, I'd rather be politic, but I'm speaking from the heart.

    PEACE

I just ignore all the Yao only arguments.

Someone tell me. Was there less drama back in the Hakeem Olajuwon days? Or did it just seem like it because I didn't come here and read bad posts? I don't remember wanting to trade anybody.

I stand my belief that there isn't really a Steve only fan group, at least not as big as the Yao only group. Just a group of people who, sometimes a little heavy handedly, defend Steve Francis from unfair criticism, trade threads, and pointless complaint threads. You'll find that most if not all the people who are involved in these spats against "yao only fans" don't start pointless threads to b**** about Yao Ming, because we are mostly team first fans. It's easy to avoid a Yao bashing thread too because they are few and far in between. They just fall of the page, but a thread bashing Steve or Cat is usually one of many with many people who agree keeping it on the page. Also, which fans have been able to enjoy the team's winning record?

Maybe there really isn't a "Yao only" group of fans but a "Hate Stevie and Cuttino" contingent. It isn't just here, it seems lots of people in Houston don't like them.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being a XXX-only fan. In fact, all those Yao-only fans may be annoying but their asinine comments often provide a great source of entertainment for me.

I encourage all posters at CCF to speak up and often. There should not be any need to call for truce. Passion is good. If someone does get out of line, I am sure Clutch will take care of these individuals.

Someone had a lot of time on there hands.

When you look at it. There really isnt a lot of bashing or whatever you like to call it, just a select few that start it and love seeing other people join in.
I havent been a member to long just about 3 months now, the things you said i really dont see to often.
This is just a game, and this is just a fan site where people can express there opnions. No need to make whole lot of drama, as if this was a Laker site with kobe and shaq.

    Wow, great points. I agree.

Sometimes, if we subsitute everything BB related and replace words with religious terms, we would sound a lot like all the hullabuloo before the Great Reformation, or maybe a bunch of middle-eastern fundamentalists shooting each other for a strip of sacred land.

I agree with your cause: PEACE IN CLUTCH BBS 2003!

This has got to stop. There are too many casualties from the recent suicide flame-bait-bombing.

Too many Yao-Only fans are claiming that the WMD (Weapons of Massive Dominance) are hidden in Yao somewhere, while the Steve-Only fans are claiming that the WMD were never there to begin with--and that's what this debate is all about. Exactly why did we declare war on the Lakers for a shot at the championship title in the first place? At the same time, the Rockets are trying to deal with a transition of power. During OPERATION OFFSEASON, we overthrew the long-standing dictator, Rudy T, and replaced him with the eastern conference puppet leader, Jeff Van Gundy, and we also sent in Secretary of Aggressiveness, Patrick Ewing, so he could find the putative WMD (Weapons of Massive Dominance) in Yao, but many of the fans are claiming that the WMD was all just a whirlwind of media propaganda by the NBA adminstration to distract fans from the declining NBA economy and public image. Things have not been easy. Since demonic terrorists flew into Eddie G's afro and into his head and blew up every single unit of morality and happiness, which caused the collapse of his emotions, and eventually his career, we have stayed resolute. The Rockets are shaken, but not destroyed.

    United We Stand.

Rockets fans are helping each other again. Rockets players are doing things they never would have done before. Cat is passing and making his shots. Pike has returned. Yao is tying Cato's shoe-laces. This is a battle between good and evil. And good, as a fellow Texan and commander and chief often says, will prevail.

Macbeth:I have never considered you a neutral poster. Yes a poster with a lot of commonsence, one that has a leveling effect, a poster that has a lot to say.
What do you have to say about the long time established Rocket Fans like myself who prefers the Big Man Style of Basketball over the Guard Oriented Game and support the Rockets move in this direction. Are you asking us not to post our opinions of players and the way Games are played?Or are you trying to reach another poster?

    JAG,

Please do not stop posting, I find you one of the most thoughtful people on this board. The pure fact that you take the time to type out your thoughts at great length impresses me. Count me as one of the ones that reads just about every word you write on this board.

BTW, I became a Niners fan because they were the closest team to Tucson that wasn't LA and because Joe Montana ROCKED!

However, the Yao-Only FANdumentalists and the Steve-Only Fandumantalists are continuing to launch their attacks of guerilla warfare with Pseudo-identities and Trolling and suicide-flame-bait bombing. It's only a matter of time before they're military coup is squelched.

In the meantime, I'm here to entertain the weary and downtrodden. That's me, Tanner Searle, the Cutch City USO girl.

MacBeth: Many of us understand your consternation. However, the board has a track record of uncivility stretching back to the dawn of the board's existence. I for one try to find a little humor in all the grumping, although my humor is offbeat and generally obtuse.

Like most of the board, I love the game and I love the Rockets but I am not able to discuss the x's and o's with any degree of intelligence. I enjoy the posters who can. Similarly, there are posters with superior levels of expertise in areas like CAB rules and regulations. I love to read those posts too. However, there are many -- too many -- who pretend they are knowledgeable about this or that, but they quantify their ignorance fairly quickly and emphatically.

My point is this: read the pertinent materials and posters, scan the general rhetoric for nuggets of insight, and ignore the buffoons. It's a simple methodology, but it works for me.

As for the D&D, I find the posters in that forum too rigid in their thinking to hear another side or try to understand another view. I prefer to consider all aspects of a topic. It's like observing a mountain's south face, then east, then north and then west before deciding which iis the easiest and most logical to climb.

Plod along with the tattered but still sane contingent of rational posters. The rest of us will be watching from the foxholes.

I agree with you about the big man style of basketball and further believe that this team will improve dramatically when Yao touches the ball in at least two out of every three trips down. I think that MacBeth is asking for people to write substantive commentary about their feelings about the style of ball we play rather than just dropping flames and insulting the intelligence of other posters.

If you have an opinion about basketball or the team, state it, but do so politely.

I agree wholeheartedly. There is no such thing as a "Steve Only Fan." There is no community of Takoma Park Marylanders who log on from internet cafes in hopes of following his exploits from afar.

Look, I'd probably be accused of being the one of biggest Steve defenders here. That's ridiculous, I wouldn't even go as far as to say he was my favorite player on the Rockets. I just defend our all star point guard from the relentless torrent of criticism that other Rockets fans (or so called fans) heap upon him on a daily basis.

Look, I stopped following NCAA basketball around 98, so I didn't know Steve Francis from anything when Houston traded for him. But as, the years progressed I realized 2 things

    1. he's really good
    2. he plays for the same basketball team I have followed religiously for the last quarter century.

Did that turn me into a Steve Francis "Fan"? Yeah, I guess it did.

You know what though? Yao fits those two qualifications as well, so I'm a Yao Ming fan too. Sweet.

Anyway, back to being in the pro-Steve camp, have a look at my posts. I didn't say that he (or cuttino) was/are perfect, I acknowledged his shortcomings and just respond to the most asinine arguments ('Steve is no better than JR Bremer or Derek Fisher', was my personal favorite/most detested one) being advanced against him. I don't thik there is anything unreasonable about chiming in now and then to stop the idiocy, because it's not like those threads were going to die on their own anyway; as a rockets fan and responsible poster, I felt somewhat duty bound to attempt to prevent the bash fests (although the habitual offenders I have recently just put on ignore).

However, what makes it worse is the absolute double standard.

Example, silentfan, I believe, is a poster who was doing a lot of guard bashing back and forth with me the game thread last night , and has often made comments that could be construed as being made by a YOF (not saying he is one, I don't think he is)

However, a few days ago he started a thread questioning Yao's purported high basketball IQ. Guess what happened? An onslaught of posters chimed in to tell him how dumb he was, etc, etc etc., without even addressing the substance. Would a thread saying the same about SF or CM get the same response? No, because they are too many of them, they have become commonplace. The sad part is silentfan wasn't jsut doing a mindless bash, that said YAO SUCKSSS TRADE HIM!! like many of the SF/CM threads/posts, but that he had legitimate arguments. But it didn't matter.

Hell, last night people were getting all ornery with me for my comments in the game thread. Look at them. Essentially, I said, I'm happy, the Rockets won, I'm glad we hit our shots, Yao can't score on the bench, Iheard Dunleavey was ddoubling Yao w/o the ball, etc etc. NOthing really ugly or critical of anybody, or singling out anybody (poster or player) for extreme praise either.

But then I got slammed by a bunch of people for not being sufficiently denunciative of the guards. (in a supreme bit ofirony, it seems like standardized denunciations have become the 'party' line around here these day...remind anybody of anything. ;)...alright that was bad but I couldn't resist massaging my ego with delusions of wit)

Anyway, I'm not sure how to end this missive, but just lighten up guys. I'm a Rockets fan, you're a Rockets fan, the Rockets just won, and are, in general thus far, winning, this season and I think it's great. :)

    Mac,
Has civility dereased around here? Yes.
Is it so bad that it over-rides the value of th eboard? not imo..

be patient, and see if the new-found emphasis on civility and quality posting has any effect before declaring things out of control.

I do appreciate your concern, and am thankful that you feel enough to post about it.
Like andy, I also somehow manage to read every word you write, your labors are not totally for naught..
