So I get my power back today only to find out that my A/C won't turn on. The A/C was working fine until Ike knocked out my power. Now, I'll set the thermostat very low and nothing happens. Any ideas on what I can try? I'm hoping it is just a setting or something. Thanks.

Have you checked a breaker? It is common that a lot of breakers may have tripped due to overloading once all the power came back on.

Have you checked all your circuit breakers. One could have popped when the power came back on.

Is there a fan setting on the thermostat?
If so, does the fan come on?

check to see if your water pan is full of water and tripped the sensor

check switches to fan coil and compressor aren't popped out

Try to cycle them. Turn them off and then back on again. Also try to cycle the main breaker.

The fan comes on. And I think that when I had it set to Auto, the fan did come on then too. I have had it on for 3 hours and my house's temp went up 1 degree.

If you haven't already, try this out even though the fans work. This usually does the trick for me.

I tried that to no avail. Maybe it is my thermostat.

While I am hardly the electrician, I don't think that a hurricane should take out my A/C. Maybe that is wishful thinking.

I have a digital thermostat. My compressor is not coming on outside, but I do have air (I assume fan) blowing inside.

maybe you got a freon leak on your compressor outside, something knocked that cannister loose that's connected to your compressor during the hurricane

if your thermostat is battery back up powered, maybe it ran low during the power outage, though if you got power now this shouldn't be a problem

There might have been a minor weakness in the contactor or some other electrical component prior to Ike and the up & down power situation might have pushed it over the edge.

Did you have numerous Off/On situation just before you lost power?

    A couple of times.

I wonder if insurance will cover this, if the hurricane caused it.

Sounds like the capacitor, just call an AC guy if you can...those are relatively cheap to fix.

Also, did you cycle the breakers outside your house next to your AC unit or just the ones in the house?

I will call an A/C guy to come out. As far as the breakers, I only have them outside of the house.
