50 wins will likely be needed to get above the bottom tier, and JVG was rarely capable of such heights in the East.

Sure, if we can dump Strickland and add a 30-year-old Hakeem to the roster.

Eh, does it matter? We're in 7th place right now, and it'll take 50 wins just to get the sixth seed anyhow. I don't see how it makes a big difference, and honestly, I'd rather play the Spurs than the Suns or Sonics come playoff time.

Hakeem was the best player in the NBA.

Hey, I love Yao and Tmac, but ....no. They have a little way to go before they can do THAT ;).

Actually I'd prefer to play the sonics and suns instead of the spurs regardless of how we did against them in regular season games.

he sits on our bench every night.

and yes, we do not wanna face the spurs. regular season wins are nice and everything but they would plow us once the playoffs start. they're gonna plow everyone once the playoffs start. get out of the way of that train if you can.

and i don't see 50 wins needed for 6th. the lakers are 6th now and not exactly racing to 50. maybe memphis makes it but out of us, la, mem, and minny i can only see memphis making it to 50 and i doubt they do.

edc, you really are an idiot aren't you?

The East/West disparity didn't really come into existence until after the Shaq and Webber moved out west, Garnett and Duncan came into their own, and the big men of the previous generation started declining (Ewing to age and Mourning to disease). Until about the year 2000, both conferences were fairly even.

JVG resigned his post in 2001. In the five full seasons he coached the Knicks (in an Eastern conference that wasn't weak I might add), he had two 50-win seasons and a third season with 48 wins.

    Get your facts straight buddy.

Out of Minn, Houston, Memphis one of these teams is not going to make the playoffs... Whoever makes the runs will make the playoffs.

I think one of these teams will have 45+ wins and not make the playoffs.

Everygame is a battle for one of those last two spots.

<- man, I love it when people eat CROW... we'll see about this OPTIMIST come end of season... :D

If you threaten to trade the WHOLE TEAM and then have the other team's players FAIL THE PHYSICAL, and our WHOLE TEAM will go off scoring bunches of points, making a run...

ONLY THEN you will have a dé Ja Vu.

Breaking News! Horry almost traded for Sean Elliott, but Elliott fails the physical... months later, we make it to 2nd round against Seattle and lose...

40% is less than half. Add in last season with the Rockets, you get 33%, which in my book qualifies as "rarely." 48 is not 50. With the exception of MJ's Bulls (agreed, a BIG exception), the West was better than the east in the nineties, although not as drastically.

The example of this most folks here remember is the whole "miracle" deal in 1995. A big part of that was because the Rockets went through the teams with the best regular season records. The Spurs, Jazz, Suns, and Sonics all had the same or better records than Orlando.
