I'll preface this by saying that I am a big Howard Stern fan and I've been looking for a download of his show on the day of the 9/11 attacks. I finally found it and listened to it last night and it felt like it was happening all over again. I couldn't help but get goosebumps by listening to the commentary of the events as they unfolded. This prompted me to check youtube this morning for new videos of the attacks (haven't seen anything involving 9/11 in a couple years) and I was shocked at some of the amateur video of the attacks. Here a few worthwhile vids that I came across: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kv4s3fn8jDc&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kv4s3fn8jDc&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/J0Qu6eyyr4c&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/J0Qu6eyyr4c&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> I can't watch either of these vids without getting goosebumps.
Every once in a while I go to youtube and look at old news footage. Its just surreal. What prompted you to get the Howard Stern recording? I figured you'd post a link to it, at least. What about that specific show was interesting? (that first video is disturbing for a few reasons... the kevin cosgrove phone call is just bone chilling... and actually seeing the people from the WTC who jumped hit the ground.. that is just barbaric... and the train bombing in madrid.. you can see people getting hit by the blast... that is not cool, imo)
I agree on the Stern audio. He was broadcasting in NYC live and literally followed it moment by moment. The reactions to events as they were happening by real people on the radio is fascinating. And listeners from around the city were calling in and doing the same. It was a very non-Stern moment, heh. Dropped all the normal schtick and were just people in New York for a day, following everything going on. I've listened to it in its entirety several times. It's a great snapshot of the day in one broadcast.

It occurred to me the other day that we are now 7 years past that horrible day. I forget which TV show it was (maybe South Park) that made the joke that any event that would normally be considered taboo to joke about is fair game after it is 7 years old. Somehow I don't ever see 9/11 not being "too soon"
It's our generation's Kennedy assassination, our Pearl Harbor. I didn't really understand what that meant until it happened. Seeing those images every time makes me turn over inside. It's that same feeling you got as a little kid when you realized you just did something terrible and wished for nothing except to somehow take it back and undo what just happened. I also shocked myself a little realizing how long it's been since it took place. Evan
I think more are. For example check out this snippet from "Life on Mars" which is about a cop who's been transferred back to 1973. I got a little rush when I first saw this scene. And this is coming from someone who actually worked there at Morgan Stanley in 2000. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9zyPEL_2LGE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9zyPEL_2LGE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I was talking about this the other day with a coworker. Seven years ago and I think a lot of people have already forgotten about it. I mean, they remember it, but I don't think they remember the shock of how truly monumental the event was. The same people that said they'd "never forget" have already started forgetting. Not to mention, there is a whole crop of elementary kids going to school that already have no memories of the event because it either happened before they were born or were too young to grasp the reality of it. I am not pro-gitmo, torture, or Iraq war, however, I just hope that we don't forget this event to the extent that we start dismantling our intellegence and counter terrorism abilities here and abroad. I want my kids to grow up without a "never forget" event in their life.
I can't believe it has been 7 years already. I remember this tragedy vividly. I have not forgot but it has been pushed back in my mind so that I don't think about it until I see a reference to 9/11 then it will bring back memories. The shock value definitely faded but it is still there. I agree that this is our "Pearl Harbor" event in our lifetimes. I hope there won't be another one while I'm still alive or my kids growing up.
It's an interesting question. Honestly, I never think that much of it anymore. Call it a non-appreciation for the history of such events I guess, but it doesn't have the shock value anymore. What I am shocked about usually is that it's been X more years sine it happened on each anniversary. It seems like it didn't happen that long ago at all. It's most definitely the big event of my generation though.
Thanks, listening to it now. It's still chilling to listen to, but it's great to have recordings like this.
you should watch the special on HBO about all the people taking video during the attacks and the aftermath.
