Can anyone ever remember having a worse top 10 weekend slew of movies? http://movies.yahoo.com/news/ap/20040912/109504098000.html 1. "Resident Evil: Apocalypse," $23.7 million. 2. "Cellular," $10.6 million. 3. "Without a Paddle," $4.6 million. 4. "Hero," $4.4 million. 5. "Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement," $2.93 million. 6. "Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid," $2.90 million. 7. "Vanity Fair," $2.74 million. 8. "Collateral," $2.70 million. 9. "Napoleon Dynamite," $2.65 million. 10. "Paparazzi," $2.60 million. Maybe movies always suck this bad this time of year but they all seem pretty poor this year.
Take a look at last year at the same time. The weekend after Labor Day is usually putrid. All the kids are going back to school so, the thinking is that they don't want to be watching movies at this time because of summer movie burnout and new school year tensions. So what ends up getting released are movies that the studios doesn't have enough confidence in to give them a better release date.
no way. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2003&wknd=03&p=.htm 1 Kangaroo Jack $16,580,209 2 National Security $14,369,694 3 Just Married $11,871,330 4 Catch Me If You Can $10,696,726 5 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers $10,274,388 6 Chicago $7,602,133 7 A Guy Thing $6,988,749 8 About Schmidt $5,669,076 9 The Hours $4,644,924 10 Gangs of New York $3,712,112 lots of good movies that weekend. as far as this time last year this year is much worse: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2003&wknd=37&p=.htm It had Pirates of the Carribean, Freaky Friday, and Seabiscuit in the top 10
I guess you're right about last year. There was some decent flicks out. But in general September is a crummy month for movie watching. This year might just be especially crummy.
It probably didn't help that the anniversary of 9/11 was saturday.... Nobody I know was out doing anything that night. I'm pretty sure a good percentage of people were in the same mood. That in combo with everyone being broke after buying craploads of clothes and books and supplies for school... I'm not surprised at all.
hero and collateral are both really good, haven't seen any of the rest but judging from what i've heard, yeah it looks like a pretty crappy list.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse was described on the Today Show as "Milla Jovovich in a bath towel killing zombies". That just rox. Only in America.
I would say that you could say that about four of those movies on here-Resident Evil, Anaconda, Princess Diaries, Without a Paddle (even though I kinda want to see the last one). However, Cellular's been receiving some pretty decent reviews. I plan on seeing it as I thought the preview made it look pretty good. Hero was a pretty damn good movie, as was Paparazzi. OK, Paparazzi wasn't a good movie, but it was damn sure entertaining (thanks Nomar). Collateral I haven't seen, but everyone I've talked to that's seen it says it's an amazing movie. Vanity Fair isn't my cup of tea, but I've heard good things from the people who I know that have seen it. Napoleon Dynamite is being heralded by critics and fans alike. One of the funniest movies of the year, if not the funniest. Six out of 10 movies being above-average is not that bad, especially at this time of the year.
Hollywood did not run out they just decided to make safer bets and to fund sequals and remakes. It is very unfortunate, the video game industry is starting to mirror their strategy....it sucks. DD
But only three of the 10 are sequels. You could argue that two of them are remakes, maybe, but I don't think so. I'd say you have 60% original stuff, and it's not bad either. I think it's a cop-out to say that Hollywood's not original anymore. And if you're pissed off about it, be pissed off at those who pay to see those movies, not Hollywood for trying to make money.
I don't resent people for paying for what they enjoy even if I don't enjoy it. As long as there is an Alamo Drafthouse, I'm happy. If you're in the mood for something different, I would suggest Ju-on at the Alamo Drafthouse:Village in Austin or the Angelika in Houston.
Oh, I don't resent them either. I've never understood how upset people get at other people's tastes. I just think that if you are going to be pissed about the perception that Hollywood is putting out crap, you need to focus your hostility to the right people. I think it's nonsense either way. What is that movie? Honestly, I don't have a hard time finding movies I want to see. I've been pleasantly entertained all summer long with a nice mix of blockbusters and smaller films. I've loved IRobot, Spiderman 2, Garden State, Napoleon Dynamite, and The Bourne Supremacy.
