that is what Canceco claimed in his book and I belive him. look at how many names that report came up with from two trainers As far as the Astros are concerned, looking back it seems most of them juiced I sure hope Biggio (being Mr. Baseball in Houston) did not but I'm 99% sure guys like Bagwell and Gonzo were on it along with Carl Everett, Cami and some of the other cheaters that have been exposed. IMO, this was not a few clubs who had "problems" it was everyone and it really pisses me off. I want kids one day and I want to push them to playing little league but how can we tell our kids to watch/love/embrace baseball if it's not legit. I hope the players union agree's to an olympic testing policy with a 1 strike and your out policy.
I believe a lot were cheating, but I don't believe it is anywhere near that high of a percentage. I'd put it closer to 30%...which is still ridiculously high (7.5 players per 25 man roster). 85% is 21 players per roster. I just don't think only 4 guys per team are clean.
I voted no, but just to comment on that. Jose said during it's prime 85% was cheating, I think that could be true. But not anymore, I'd say like 50-60%.
I think if you tallied all the guys and didn't discriminate between Caminatti types and those who just dabbled on a particular occasion like an injury, the number would probably top off around 60 or 70%. But no one knows, probably no one single player could know either. A lot of times, you just think about Bonds-level swelling, WWF types with the steroids. But a ton of users are like Pettite, and there are a ton of shoulder/elbow-rehabbing pitchers out there that get desperate. In the NFL? I could easily believe 85% Evan
I voted yes, but I misread the question (because it doesn't match the thread title). Study after study has shown that 15-20% of baseball players have used steroids. I see no reason to doubt that. The 85% that I was talking about is amphetamine users. Just about everyone in baseball uses "greenies". It is considered part of the game.
I know I'm the great MLB defender...but how come no one talks about this in relation to the NFL??? In baseball, they wanna strip guys' HOF credentials for it....what happens in the NFL?? How come the entire focus of all the media's attention on this is squarely centered around MLB??
I played high school baseball in the late 90's and 30% of our team was on it, so I don't see how a sport that had no testing for these drugs would have a number so low when millions are at stake
The DPOY last year was suspended four games during that season for steroid use and there was hardly any outrage, especially not from the media. I don't get it either.
they have had a drug policy in place for years and they have random testing. mlb had nothing and then when they started it was a joke, they would inform you when your test was coming. Look football players workout year around and with the off season programs + all the mini camps roids will not help them that much more so not worth the risk. Of course guys like Merrimum(sp) are going to be on every team and they will try to get that extra edge but clearly it's not the problem it is in baseball nor does it effect performance so much ie. home runs or an extra 3-5 mph on a fastball. my .02
i think 85% is way too high. i wouldn't be shocked at 50% but i think 30% seems more reasonable and is still a very high percentage of people using illegal substances.
then i hope you're willing to ignore all the amphetamines players did in the 70's and 80's, or the god knows what else prior to that.
Some baseball players workout a ton (shoot, even Rocket was well-known for his conditioning). It doesn't mean they wouldn't be helped.. And I'm not sure where you get that roids wouldn't give football players just as much an edge (if not more) than in baseball. football is all about athleticism...speed, quickness, STRENGTH, etc.. Give a D lineman a little extra speed and he can go nuts. Give an O lineman a little extra strength and he can be the TExans' starting LT
yes, steroids only work for baseball players. football players don't want an edge in strength, ever. that might be the most ridiculous thing i've read today.
NFL has a more publicized drug program and all the blame is generally placed on player for cheating instead of institutional lack of control. If anything, certain fans are critical of the NFL for suspending players fro nonperformance enhacing drugs. If I recall correctly, the NFL Hall of Fame is supposedly limited to onfield work. Character issues and felonies don't count. I doubt steroid issue will be held against players as it is viewed that they served their punishment if caught.
you maybe right Max, but there's only a Mitchell report for baseball. Oh, people like Brett Favre breaking Marino's record. No one likes Barry Bonds.
It seems to me the blame in the current baseball discussion is falling completely on the players. You're right about the HOF in the NFL. I thought of that when I was posting it. At this point, baseball has the same testing that the NFL does, though.
