What kind of parent let's their kid shoot an Uzi?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    Link to this tragedy

WESTFIELD, Massachusetts (AP) -- An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

An 8-year-old shot and killed himself with an Uzi submachine gun like the weapon shown here.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, Police Lt. Lawrence Valliere said.

The boy was with a certified instructor and "was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury," a police statement said. Police called it a "self-inflicted accidental shooting."

The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died. His name was not released.

Although the death appears to be an accident, police and the Hampden district attorney's office were investigating, officials said.

The club said on its Web site that the event, run in conjunction with C.O.P. Firearms and Training, is "all legal and fun." People will be allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets, it said.

Officials with the private club and the firearms group could not be reached for comment. A message left on a club answering machine was not returned. The C.O.P. group's machine clicked off without taking a message.

The sportsman's club was founded in 1949 and describes itself on its Web site as an organization that promotes "the interest of legal sport with rod, gun, and bow and arrow, both directly and through training."

It has eight firing ranges as well as archery and fishing facilities located on 375 acres in Westfield, about 100 miles west of Boston.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

This stuff would never happen if we could get some decent gun control laws on the books.

We don't need UZI's to hunt.....ridiculous and tragic at the same time.

I'm all for gun control, but this is all parenting right here. You let your 8 year old son shoot a freaking Uzi? That pisses me off more than the fact that Uzi's are for some stupid reason legal.

Agreed, but why would an UZI even be at a Gun fair...why does ANYONE need an Uzi?

How else are you going to make Youtube videos of yourself shooting an Uzi?

There isn't much sense in it. I just don't get why people are so passionate about guns. It's one thing to like them for hunting or protection. But just to own and shoot different type of guns for the hell of it? I don't get it. Play Halo or something.

Watch out. CaseyH is going to post on here and give a long essay about how guns are constitutional and that if more people packed heat there would be less crime.

I won't get into the gun debate here, as to why I own 'em and such.

But Uzi is the most poorly manufactured, piece of crap gun. I love my guns....but I love my kids even more, no way I'm letting my 8 year old fire an Uzi, even if I have both hands wrapped around the gun myself.

Let me get this this straight, some idiot let his 8 year old not only shoot a (real) gun, but it happened to be a fully auto submachine gun?

Why not let him drive himself to school on the interstate while you are at it?

Geez these people are so freaking dumb.

The first point of failure is obviously the parent, but why did the 'certified instructor' allow this kid to shoot too? It seems obvious an 8 year old wouldn't handle the recoil and end up spraying bullets.

The gun nuts are concerned because the percentage of people using guns and doing things like hunting drops every year. Thus, there is a concerted effort to teach the fun of guns to little kids in the hopes that they grow up and become gun advocates.

    It's sick.

Not that it matters, but I don't think the gun was full auto.

It was -- they usually aren't full auto because they are difficult to license.

Really ? I thought it was just your typical gun show/ expo deal.

Anyway, letting an eight year old shoot a full auto uzi is beyond moronic.

No he was shooting it at a range along with many other people shooting. Gun shows don't have loaded weapons usually.

Makes complete business and political sense.

If I were them, that's what I'd do.

What else are they supposed to do?
